CLASSICAL STUDIES Throughout the year, we have remained engaged in a whirlwind of enthusiastic learning and enjoyable experiences, marked by the resurgence of Level 2. It has been a joy to witness students engaging with the literature, arts, and drama of the ancient world. Our connection with the University of Canterbury and the Teece Museum remains strong, enabling students to discover fresh avenues of learning beyond the traditional classroom environment. Anticipation builds for our upcoming overseas journey to Italy and Greece, the very origins of

Delphi, Santorini, Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Pompeii, Monte Cassino, and concluding in Rome. The boys have endured some lengthy days in the hot weather, immersing themselves in the wonders of the ancient world. They have also been fortunate to enjoy relaxation time by the pools and the Mediterranean Sea – something most of us would not have been doing during our teen years. Undoubtedly, the boys have expressed their appreciation for this once-in-a-lifetime journey, showing their maturity and awareness of such an experience. I have taken pride in the way they have conducted themselves during our trip. Entrusting the boys with this overseas adventure required a great deal of faith, and they have truly surpassed my expectations, taking each day in their stride with a positive attitude. I feel incredibly fortunate to be their teacher. They make me so proud. A heartfelt expression of gratitude goes to Ginny Patterson and Shelly Jackson, whose invaluable support has been instrumental in the

paintings looking at the interaction of people with nature. These works were full of movement and rich colour. George Brakenridge also submitted an original portfolio based on dreams. Well done to all the students for your great effort and for contributing to a wonderful creative environment. As I conclude this report, we congratulate Eric Liu on winning the Penlington Cup for 2023. This cup is awarded to the student who displays consistent effort throughout his time in the Art Department. Eric has achieved this and more. He has set the benchmark in Art in Years 11 and 12 and again this year. He has been a hard-working student in three Level 3 courses, and has also submitted Scholarship workbooks. Well done Eric on this award. Congratulations everyone on another great year. We wish our leaving students all the very best for the future. Nga mihi nui Darryn George HoD Art
