the Year 13 mentors for 2023: Neville Bailey, Hamish Howard, Phil Johnson, John Syme, Scott McCulloch, Dean McGuigan, Kris Inglis, Stephen Dods, and Dr Mike Field. Thank you to all Commerce Department members – Graeme Christey, William Bell, Jennifer Thomas, Arthur Wood, Logan Ball, and Neil Porter – for a fantastic year. You are an amazing team and your dedication, support, and collegiality have been very much appreciated. I look forward to working with you in 2024. Katie Southworth HoD Commerce

help me run all of Technologies. With Ms Bradley-Hudson back, I have been able to work more closely with Craig Walker in Digital Technology. We look forward to planning some exciting courses and, hopefully, an overseas trip in the next few years to look at how technology is influencing design and society. Digital Technology This year in Digital Technology, the emphasis for seniors was to develop a digital outcome using a project-based learning approach. Boys were able to choose to create almost anything that was of interest to them. Outcomes in Year 13 ranged from an electronics and programming-based cycle computer with GPS and music capabilities to a computer-animated re-creation of the car chase scene from James Bond’s No Time to Die . Year 12s developed an equally varied range of outcomes, from a first-person tour of the school using digital modelling to a platform computer game. The challenge for the seniors has been to problem solve and manage their projects and show an understanding of how digital technology outcomes are influenced by many implications, including cultural, legal, health and safety, and usability considerations. Once again, all senior students successfully sat their DCAT exams

in the relatively new approach to digital examinations for external assessment standards. These ran smoothly thanks to the help of the Digital Services team and the exam preparation completed earlier in the year. For Year 9s, we have been introducing and beginning to develop skills and understanding of digital media and computer programming as they progress towards becoming independent in the design and development of their outcomes as they build towards Year 12 and beyond. Students in Years 10–11 built on this knowledge in Diploma courses that allowed students to investigate computational thinking and the design process. Projects of work introduced students to a range of digital tools and skills, including studies into algorithms, programming, web development, robotics, and the relationship between computers and humans. DESIGN & DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY This year, there was the

restructuring of the Technology Department because of so much growth, both with boys and staff. At the start of the year, it was split into two departments, with Emma Bradley-Hudson taking over all Workshop subjects and Monique Ellis-Martin looking after Design & Digital Technology. Unfortunately, due to illness, Ms Bradley-Hudson was on leave until Term 3 so I must recognise and thank all the Workshop staff – Kevin Harris, Gavin Love, Carey Prebble, and Kerry Brockelbank – for stepping up to
