Hailing originally from just down the line in Ashburton and attending Ashburton College, teaching may not have been in his background, but it must have been in the air. All four of his siblings now teach. Shannon gained his Bachelor of Theatre Arts from the University of Otago, and followed the call of the stage to Toi Whakaari where he attained a Bachelor of Performing Arts (Acting). This launched his career as a professional actor. Shannon will not be the last actor to recognise that “all the world's a stage” and the lure of teaching took him to a nine-year stint teaching English language in South Korea, including six satisfying years working at Han Yang University. His return to New Zealand took him back to Dunedin where he accepted a post at Bayfield High School, followed by a shift to Christchurch and Rangiora High School, which brought him here to College in his dual role across English and Drama. Shannon’s outstanding capacity as a teacher has been an enormous asset to us already. When considering any clouds on the horizon, there is no doubt that the new literacy requirements that are attached to our national qualification,

Our educational voyage this year was characterised by an injunction to stay the course. After some significant internal curriculum change in recent years, such as the introduction of the College Diploma, and with the distant visage of NCEA assessment change on the horizon, 2023 was marked down as one of consolidation. While we may have charted familiar waters this year, to tangible effect, we embrace the winds of change and our response to this is building from a small ripple, starting with the 2023 Year 9 cohort. This year, we welcomed Shannon Small (Te Atiawa) to our team.
