Somes Prize for Outstanding Overall Contribution to the Arts and General Scholarship William’s scholastic achievements are impressive, with Gold Badges awarded in Years 12 and 13 and outstanding results this year. His teachers have been delighted with his attitude in the classroom and have appreciated his diligence. As the Head of Arts & Culture, he lived up to his responsibilities to the arts in his commitment, participation, and leadership. He was a member of the Big Band for five years, Head of Big Band this year, and has won the Cup for Contribution to Big Band. He was involved in every production possible while at College, a member of the very successful Theatresports team, and highly active in instrumental music, including chamber group. He played a critical role in House Music and House Plays for Julius House. For his efforts in the arts, he has received seven Honours Ties – two for Drama, four for Instrumental Music and one for Theatresports. This is an extraordinary achievement. He promoted the arts enthusiastically at College through his assembly announcements, leadership, and support of events such as the staff vs student debate, as well as the non-talent festival. In doing so, he encouraged boys to show their creativity. William has managed all of this in a wonderfully cheerful, positive, and respectful manner, with excellent interpersonal skills, confidence and humility, and the disposition to serve.

HM Chrystall Prize for All-round Merit in Sport and Scholarship Matthew has excelled in all aspects of his school life. He received Gold Badges for his NCEA Level 1 and 2 results and has applied himself diligently to his studies. Offers of scholarships from Auckland, Canterbury, and Otago universities recognise his scholastic ability and all-round excellence in leadership, culture, and sport. Matthew is an accomplished sportsman. He has been in the Senior A volleyball team for three years and has captained the team for the last two of these years. He has played volleyball at the highest standards this year in the Canterbury U19 team, winning the interprovincial tournament; as well as playing beach volleyball for the Canterbury U19 team. He has been selected for the New Zealand Junior Men’s Indoor Team for the Asian Volleyball Championships in 2024. Matthew is a sporting mentor for younger players and willingly gives of his time to assist them. He has achieved all of this while being a highly effective Deputy Head Prefect and against the backdrop of a very busy cultural life in drama productions, Big Band, Chapel Choir, and Schola Cantorum. Consequently, he has received Colours for volleyball and Honours Ties for Drama, Choral, and Instrumental contributions. How has he found the time for all of this, plus working towards a Gold Duke of Edinburgh? He has managed all of this with wonderful equanimity and positivity and has demonstrated all of our graduate attributes.

Maling Memorial Prize for Outstanding Service to the School Elliott has provided outstanding service to the school and the community. As student Head of Service, he has been involved in a wide range of projects, including the sleepout for the homeless, fundraising for the Westpac rescue helicopter service and the Red Cross, Daffodil Day, practical service for Millie’s House early learning centre, as well as his House service project. At College, he organised and ran the Year 11 semi-formal event and has been involved in an extraordinary number of technical support activities. These included technical support for assemblies, lighting and backstage work for Peter Pan , stage manager for the 2022 production of Light at the End of the Tunnel , set rigging for Rainbow’s Ending , and many other productions. He has been supporting House Plays and productions since he was in Year 9. All of this has been done in the true spirit of service, since Elliott has performed his duties humbly, without seeking the limelight. He is proactive, efficient, obliging, and seemingly tireless in his efforts. He has mentored younger students, which is just as well because otherwise his departure would have left us floundering and calling out “Where’s Elliott?” He has also collaborated with staff in a very mature and supportive manner. He is really an amazing young man and exemplifies many of our graduate attributes, such as enterprise, compassion, humility, interpersonal skills, a disposition to serve, and personal excellence. We hope that younger students at College aspire to follow Elliott’s example.
