ACADEMIC Careers
Career interviews The Career interviews with Years 12– 13 boys were carried out in Terms 1– 2. During the informal interview, the following topics are covered: previous year and current year subjects taken, subjects that they enjoy the most, Character Strengths, their achievements, work-related experience – paid and unpaid work – interests, and hobbies, co-curricular activities, and career goals (short and long term). The aim is to keep their options open both for school and tertiary study. Course planning for tertiary study is also covered. CareerWise The College CareerWise website allows boys and parents to keep up to date with career news and
events. CareerWise works by the placement of information in the cloud by tertiary providers and other organisations. Careers advisors can then select information that is relevant to the College community. Boys and parents can sign up to CareerWise and see what information is relevant. I have included some CareerWise links in the In Black & White fortnightly newsletters. Tertiary providers Each year, tertiary providers make two visits to Christ’s College. The first visit includes a general talk in Term 1, with a follow-up visit in Term 3 when they return for course planning. Course planning covers the selection of key subjects for the first year of tertiary education.
The aim is also to build flexibility into future study programmes to allow for possible changes during the first year. The University of Canterbury, Lincoln University, and Ara representatives attended the Options Evening and were available to talk to parents and boys. An Ara drop-in session in the library was appreciated by boys seeking information and advice. CAREER CONVOS Career Convos – held on Thursday mornings throughout the year – have been very successful, with boys from all year groups attending and learning about a range of careers from Old Boys and other community members.
