As we close another chapter in our school year, I am filled with pride reflecting on our Year 12 students who recently concluded their schooling journey. Their hard work and dedication were celebrated in a memorable way, with a whole - Campus guard of honour held along the entirety the Learning Street. This momentous occasion not only marked their achievements but also reinforced the strong sense of community we share at The Lakes. Congratulations to our Year 12 students—may your future endeavors be bright and fulfilling! I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our Secondary students for their remarkable adaptability during the VCE exam period. Your understanding of the importance of a quieter environment, free from school bells, demonstrates our College values of Respect and Teamwork. Your cooperation has made a significant difference, and I commend you for your maturity during this crucial time. The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT
A special shout - out goes to our Year 7/8 Volleyball team, who competed in the Regional Finals! Your hard work and commitment to the sport have brought you this significant achievement. We are incredibly proud of your efforts and sportsmanship. In our recent staff opinion survey, we are thrilled to share that The Lakes achieved impressive results, scoring higher than similar and network schools in all 41 key improvement areas. Furthermore, in 39 of these areas, our scores were significantly above the state average. This reflects the strong sense of connection and collaboration among our staff, of which we are incredibly proud. We are dedicated to fostering an environment where our educators feel valued and empowered to contribute to the future development of our school. We recognise that happy and connected staff play a crucial role in enhancing student engagement and outcomes, creating a positive ripple effect throughout our entire community. As we continue to foster a safe and nurturing environment, I would like to remind our students and families of our expected behaviours. When engaging with the College, there is an expectation that we all adhere to the College Values of Respect, Teamwork, Leadership, and Learning in our daily interactions. It is essential that The Lakes remains a place where every individual feels safe, supported, and encouraged to be their best selves—no exceptions. As we look ahead, I want to remind families that preparations for 2025 are well underway. You can expect to receive important communications via Compass regarding the School Saving Bonus, Curriculum Contributions, and Book Lists. Curriculum contributions are vital for The Lakes to meet the demands of providing diverse extracurricular opportunities and maintaining optimal learning facilities for our students. Additionally, purchasing prescribed resources from the book lists is essential in ensuring that your child is fully prepared for learning and can access all required materials. Your support in these areas is greatly appreciated and plays a crucial role in enhancing the educational experience for all students. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our school community. Together, let ’ s continue to make Lakes South Morang College a wonderful place to learn and grow.
STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
YEAR 1 REFLECTION MATZU & WILLIAM YEAR 1 SRC
This Term in Year 1, we learned a lot about time! We did some really fun activities like drawing heaps of different clocks. We loved using markers to make the numbers and hands on the clocks, and we got really good at telling the time! One of the best parts was when we went outside and drew clocks with chalk on the pavement. It was super fun because we could make really big clocks and practice with our friends. We liked seeing how everyone drew their clocks differently! Another amazing thing that happened this Term was our Year 1 dinner and disco party. It was so special! Our Year 1 teachers did an awesome job setting everything up. The room looked amazing with decorations, party hats, and disco balls. They even played cool music for us to dance to! We had the best food ever! There were hot chips, potato cakes, Zooper Doopers, and special juice. We loved sitting at the table with our friends, eating yummy food and chatting. After we ate, we all danced and played games at the disco. It was so much fun dancing with our friends and playing all the games. We felt so happy and excited!

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES (PLC)
WHAT IS A PLC?
PLCs were introduced in 2016 and are now a core part of Victoria ’ s architecture for improvement in government schools. PLCs are teams of teachers within a school who work collaboratively to improve student learning and wellbeing. PLCs work on the school improvement priorities outlined in their school ’ s School Strategic Plan (SSP) or Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). They use the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes 2.0 Improvement Cycle (FISO) to work through short, 6 to 8 week cycles focused on improving learning and wellbeing. At The Lakes, the implementation of PLC across the Primary and Secondary Campuses has taken place as part of our AIP. Over the next few issues of the College Newsletter we will share with you the outcomes of some of these College PLCs.
PRIMARY CELEBRATION
During Term 3 primary teaching staff worked in teams to identify a problem of practice to ensure a consistent approach to our spelling and phonics program ‘ Soundwaves ’. We followed the PLC cycle and spent some significant time as staff upskilling our phonics and phonemic awareness knowledge. During the develop and plan stage we reviewed research to determine evidence based approaches and implemented these changes in our teaching and learning program. At the end of the PLC cycle staff were able to celebrate and share that their change to practise resulted in students learning growth and allowed students to have increased confidence and engagement in their understanding of phonics. This deep dive into Phonics enables our teachers to be ready to confidently implement the Victorian government mandate that from 2025, all students from Prep to Year 2 will be taught using a systematic synthetic phonics approach as part of their reading programs, with a minimum of 25 minutes daily explicit teaching.
POLICY SPOTLIGHT
SUN SMART - PROTECT YOUR SKIN!
http://www.thelakes.edu.au/uploads/8/3/9/0/83901006/sun_protection_policy_2023.pdf
As the days get sunnier, it's a good time to remind everyone about the importance of sun protection. Overexposure to UV radiation can cause skin damage, eye harm, and increase the risk of skin cancer later in life—especially during childhood and adolescence. UV radiation can ’ t be seen or felt but is still harmful, even on cloudy days. It ’ s highest between mid - August and April, and during school hours.
At The Lakes South Morang College, we encourage all students, staff, and families to follow sun safety measures whenever UV levels reach 3 or above, including:
Sunscreen: SPF30+ sunscreen is available on campus, and we encourage students and staff to apply it regularly.
Sunglasses: Students and staff are encouraged to wear wrap - around sunglasses that meet Australian Standards.
Shade: We provide plenty of shaded areas for outdoor activities.
We also teach sun safety through our Health and PE curriculum, and encourage families to practice sun - smart habits at home and when attending school events. Stay safe, stay sun - smart!
Sun - protective clothing: Our school uniform includes long sleeves, collars, and hats to keep kids safe.
Hats: Primary students must wear a sun - safe hat from mid - August to April. Secondary students are also encouraged to wear hats during outdoor activities.
For more tips, visit www.sunsmart.com.au.
Policies are available to all families via our website http://www.thelakes.edu.au/policies -- reports.html

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps, and sporting activities. If you have a valid means - tested concession card, such as a Veterans Affairs Gold Card, Centrelink Health Care Card, or Pensioner Concession Card, or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible. There is also a special consideration category for asylum seeker and refugee families. Payment amounts this year are $150.00 for eligible primary school students and $250.00 for eligible secondary school students. Payments are made direct to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, and sporting activities for the benefit of your child.
