The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES (PLC)
WHAT IS A PLC?
PLCs were introduced in 2016 and are now a core part of Victoria ’ s architecture for improvement in government schools. PLCs are teams of teachers within a school who work collaboratively to improve student learning and wellbeing. PLCs work on the school improvement priorities outlined in their school ’ s School Strategic Plan (SSP) or Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). They use the Framework for Improving Student Outcomes 2.0 Improvement Cycle (FISO) to work through short, 6 to 8 week cycles focused on improving learning and wellbeing. At The Lakes, the implementation of PLC across the Primary and Secondary Campuses has taken place as part of our AIP. Over the next few issues of the College Newsletter we will share with you the outcomes of some of these College PLCs.
PRIMARY CELEBRATION
During Term 3 primary teaching staff worked in teams to identify a problem of practice to ensure a consistent approach to our spelling and phonics program ‘ Soundwaves ’. We followed the PLC cycle and spent some significant time as staff upskilling our phonics and phonemic awareness knowledge. During the develop and plan stage we reviewed research to determine evidence based approaches and implemented these changes in our teaching and learning program. At the end of the PLC cycle staff were able to celebrate and share that their change to practise resulted in students learning growth and allowed students to have increased confidence and engagement in their understanding of phonics. This deep dive into Phonics enables our teachers to be ready to confidently implement the Victorian government mandate that from 2025, all students from Prep to Year 2 will be taught using a systematic synthetic phonics approach as part of their reading programs, with a minimum of 25 minutes daily explicit teaching.
