As the days get sunnier, it's a good time to remind everyone about the importance of sun protection. Overexposure to UV radiation can cause skin damage, eye harm, and increase the risk of skin cancer later in life—especially during childhood and adolescence. UV radiation can ’ t be seen or felt but is still harmful, even on cloudy days. It ’ s highest between mid - August and April, and during school hours.
At The Lakes South Morang College, we encourage all students, staff, and families to follow sun safety measures whenever UV levels reach 3 or above, including:
Sunscreen: SPF30+ sunscreen is available on campus, and we encourage students and staff to apply it regularly.
Sunglasses: Students and staff are encouraged to wear wrap - around sunglasses that meet Australian Standards.
Shade: We provide plenty of shaded areas for outdoor activities.
We also teach sun safety through our Health and PE curriculum, and encourage families to practice sun - smart habits at home and when attending school events. Stay safe, stay sun - smart!
Sun - protective clothing: Our school uniform includes long sleeves, collars, and hats to keep kids safe.
Hats: Primary students must wear a sun - safe hat from mid - August to April. Secondary students are also encouraged to wear hats during outdoor activities.
