INTRODUCTION

The Word of Life Bible Institute Library and Study Center in New York is a resource center dealing primarily with subjects taught at the Bible Institute. It has over 25,000 print and electronic book volumes and a scholarly journal database. It exists for the edification of the student body and staff. The Library Director and Team are available to help you as much as possible. It is our prayer the Library and Study Center might minister to you in some unique way.

The Library and Study Center is centrally located adjacent to The Wyrtzen Center. Its Upper and Lower Levels have access to campus Wi-Fi and are light, bright spaces conducive to focus and study.

The Upper Level contains soft seating, smart study tables, and a study room available for reservation by students for group study. The Lower Level front room contains individual smart study desks and two reservable study rooms. The Lower Level back room contains the Library Director’s office, the circulation desk, and the stacks which hold the print collection.

The Library and Study Center is a beautiful facility designed to serve you while you are a student at the Bible Institute. We are grateful for God’s provision. Take pride in it so future classes can have the same privileges you enjoy while you’re here.

II. USE OF THE LIBRARY

Upper Level

• The Upper Level of the Library and Study Center is for the purpose of studying either individually or in groups. The Library and Study Center is to be quiet: no loud talking or laughing that prevents others from studying, no disruptive groups, no watching of videos without earbuds, and no excessive volume on devices. Be considerate of your neighbor. • This level is open when the passageway to The Wyrtzen Center is open.

Lower Level

• The Lower Level front room of the Library and Study Center is a whisper-level space for individual study. When using this space, you will contribute to an environment in which each person may focus well. Study rooms are not soundproof; talking is allowed in these rooms at a level that does not disturb students sitting outside. • Use of both front and back rooms of the Lower Level is tracked through signing in and out on the iPad at the circulation desk. • Lower Level Hours are:

Respect this space by returning furnishings to their place, keeping chairs on all fours, and throwing your trash away before you leave. • Student workers on duty are to be respected and obeyed. Part of the Library Team’s role is to enforce Library and Study Center rules. Students with repeated violations will lose Library privileges. III. STUDENT RESOURCES

Print Resources

General Circulation Books – Location

All General Circulation books are shelved in the center of the stacks room on the Lower Level. These books are checked out at the Circulation Desk in that room. No book may be taken out of the Library and Study Center before being checked out at this desk. Whenever a student removes a book from the stacks for any reason, it should be returned to the Circulation Desk for the Library Team to reshelve. Students should not return any books to the shelves. – Online Search Reference books are searchable in either Destiny Library Manager or using the EBSCO Discovery Service. See the Online Resources section for details. – Borrowing Student identification cards must be used to check books out from the Library and Study Center. Students may check books out for one week. Five books per student may be checked out at a time. Books must be returned by the due date.

2

– Returning Students are responsible for returning books to the Circulation Desk during open hours or to the book drop when the Lower Level is closed. If books are left anywhere except these two locations and a late service charge is incurred, the charge will stand and must be paid. – Holds If a student wants to check a book out but it is already checked out by another student, a hold may be placed on that item online after creating a Destiny Library Manager patron account. An email notification will be sent when the book is returned and the book will be held at the circulation desk for 24 hours. – Renewal A book may be renewed for an additional week if another student has not put a hold on it. Students may create a patron account in Destiny Library Manager to log in and renew books online, or they may bring them in to the circulation desk for a member of the Library Team to renew them. – Overdue Books Books kept beyond their due date incur a late service charge of 10¢ per day after a grace period of 24 hours. Once an item reaches overdue status in Destiny Library Manager, it must be brought to the Circulation Desk for late service charge payment. Late service charges are payable in cash. Renewal is possible after the charge is paid if there is no hold on the book. Students who have an unpaid service charge balance in their Destiny Library Manager patron account lose check-out privileges until the balance is paid. – Notices Overdue and patron service charge notices are sent by the Library Director as a courtesy to students at 1, 9, and 21 days late or unpaid. Non-receipt of an email notice does not exempt students from charges. Students who do not respond to notices are entered into a system of accountability with the Library Director and Finance Team. – Loss or Damage If a book is lost or damaged, the student is responsible to pay the amount needed to replace the item. If the student chooses to replace the book, it is that student’s responsibility to get information about the book, order the book, and deliver the book to the Library and Study Center. If the student chooses not to buy another book, they will be responsible to pay the current cost of replacement of the book to the Library Director and Finance Team. Reserve Books – Location Required reading for Bible Institute courses are put on Reserve by faculty and housed on the bookcase behind the Circulation Desk. The Library Team distributes these books to students upon request. – Online Search Reserve books are searchable in either Destiny Library Manager or using the EBSCO Discovery Service. See the Online Resources section for details. – Use Students sign Reserve books out on the sign-out clipboard on the Circulation Desk and return them to the Library Team member on duty when finished. Reserve books are read in the Lower Level only and may not be taken out of the Library and Study Center building. These books are not available for hold or checkout. – Special Demand The Library and Study Center may exercise the right to recall any book at any time if it is in great demand for a course of study. At these times, the sign-out period for Reserve books will be restricted to accommodate every student who needs them. Reference Books – Location The Reference section is located across the back wall of the stacks room. The letter “R” above the call number on the spine label indicates their Reference book status.

3

– Online Search Reference books are searchable in either Destiny Library Manager or using the EBSCO Discovery Service. See Online Resources section for details. – Use Reference books may not leave the Library and Study Center. Students may sign Reference books out on the book sign-out clipboard at the Circulation Desk. – Selection Specialty books, commentary sets, Bible dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, and various translations of the Bible are among the resources in the Reference section. Dewey Decimal Classification System The Library and Study Center uses the Dewey Decimal System, which uses numbers to classify books by subject. The Library collection is arranged according to these numbers, beginning with the lowest and moving to the highest. This means that books close to the same subject will have similar numbers. – The Dewey number for each item in the collection is included in the Library’s online resources and can be used to identify and locate any book needed. See the Online Resources section for details. – The following table shows the ten major subject divisions, each with its Dewey number range. General Works ...............................................................................................................................000–099 Philosophy...................................................................................................................................... 100–199 Religion........................................................................................................................................... 200–299 Social Sciences..............................................................................................................................300–399 Philology (Languages) ....................................................................................................................400–499 Pure Science..................................................................................................................................500–599 Useful Arts, Applied Science ..........................................................................................................600–699 Fine Arts ........................................................................................................................................700–799 Literature .......................................................................................................................................800–899 History, Geography ........................................................................................................................900–999 Because of the nature of the Bible Institute’s curriculum, most of its Library resources are in the 200 section. The Library Team and Director are always available to answer questions about Destiny accounts.

EBSCO eBooks – Function

The Word of Life Bible Institute Library buys its electronic books from the EBSCO Company. The number of eBooks available increases yearly, and professors’ bibliographies and other curriculum-supporting books are given priority. – Location EBooks can be found three ways: • In EDS, eBooks are searchable by entering the title in the EDS search bar or by scrolling to the EBSCO eBook database in the list of databases included with the EDS subscription. • Destiny Library Manager has a dropdown Material Type menu where eBooks can be selected in combination with entering other search terms in its search bar. • The Library Resources tab in the Student Portal contains a dedicated link to the Word of Life Bible Institute EBSCO eBook management site.

Downloading an eBook is equivalent to checking it out and is subject to availability. Not every eBook has the same number of copies available. The Library Team or Director are available to help with any questions.

Galaxie Journal Database – Function

Galaxie Software Electronic Publishing database contains 40 scholarly journals with full-text access for student research and reference. It was created by a Dallas Theological Seminary graduate who saw a need for high- quality Christian resources. Our hope is that online access to these journals provides opportunity for substantial depth of student research and an increase in understanding and assignment quality. – Location There are two ways to locate Galaxie: • Beneath the Library Resources link in the Student Portal – Search within the Galaxie database by using its Journals Menu options • Using EDS – Perform searches using the EDS search bar – 20 of Galaxie’s 40 journals are indexed in EDS to article level – this means some search results will direct students to the exact article in a journal, while other search results will take them to the journal issue – Video Tutorial A Galaxie video tutorial is available under the Library Resources tab in the left column of the Student Portal. This tutorial explains in detail how to perform searches in Galaxie. – Access Since Galaxie is housed within the Student Portal, no additional authentication is needed for students to access the database either from EDS or its direct link. Student accounts are not created within Galaxie.

InterLibrary Loan – Function

Word of Life Bible Institute participates in an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) agreement with other colleges and universities through its membership in the Christian Library Consortium. This increases the Bible Institute’s reach to off-campus resources it would not otherwise have the ability to access. – Method The option to obtain a resource through ILL is tracked through EDS. If the Bible Institute does not hold the resource directly, but it can be sent from another collection, the student will see “Request this item through

6

interlibrary loan” under Access Options for that particular collection record. Students can populate the Loan form. This is sent to the Library Director. – Video Tutorial A video tutorial demonstrating how to request an item through ILL is available under the Library Resources tab in the left column of the Student Portal.

Ryrie Online Library – Function

The Ryrie Online Library is a collection of over 2,600 of Dr. Charles Caldwell Ryrie’s digitized works including sermons, teaching notes, articles, manuscripts, and other items. These are available free of charge to students and the public. – Location The Ryrie Online Library is found at Ryrie Online Library | Word of Life Bible Institute (ryrielibrary.org).
