CPP Launches Circular Economy Roadmap by Greg Kishbaugh T he Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) has released a five-year action plan to promote the circular economy of flexible plastic packaging across Canada. The plan, which is to be implemented between 2023 and

Achievement Award, the Innova- tion Award (for companies with up to 300 employees), the Inno- vation Award (for companies with more than 300 employees) the Ris- ing Star Award, the Sustainability Award and Converter of the Year. The Team Achievement Award was introduced for the first time and was awarded to Mercian La- bels and its partners Screen, CERM and ABG for their 6-year ‘lights-out’

2027, aims to help local industry partners transition toward a circular packaging ecosystem. This new ‘Flexible Plastic Packaging Roadmap’ will involve establishing an ‘unprecedented’ cross-value chain collabora- tion among key industry partners in the country.

Circular Economy (Cont’d from Page 1)

All affiliated industry players will be required to work in close cooperation to accelerate and scale solutions to achieve this shared vision for a circular economy by 2027. Under the Flexible Roadmap, the CPP will work on the implementation of three thematic areas between now and 2027. These areas include Up- stream Innovation and Design for Circularity, Col- lection and Consumer Communication and Sorting, and Recycling and End Market Development. The entire roadmap has been developed by the CPP’s Flexibles Working Group. The roadmap’s development also involved the engagement of key industry stakeholders, non-gov- ernment organizations (NGOs), and public sector organizations such as producers, manufacturers, brands, retailers, recyclers, and stewardship agen- cies, among others. “Developing a circular economy for flexible plas- tic packaging and films is critical given the current state and the existing challenges,” said CPP strate- gic advisor and Flexibles Working Group lead fa- cilitator Paul Shorthouse. “This roadmap presents a unique opportunity for stakeholders across the plastics value chain to come together and drive rap- id, unprecedented change and investment.”

The CPP estimates that flexible packaging and films made from approximately 47 percent plastic are cur- rently in circulation across the Canadian market. However, the existing local recycling rate for this specified plastic packaging is below 2 percent. The CPP, which is a part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network, currently comprises more than 95 companies, local govern- ments, institutions, and NGOs in Canada. Recently, the CPP was joined by Tata Consumer Products as its newest stakeholder. The company aims to boost the use of recycled materials to tackle the worldwide plastic pollution crisis.

FINAT Launches LCA Initiative

FINAT, the European label association, has intro- duced a new initiative designed to give guidance to the label industry on the growing market demand for Product Carbon Footprint data. The initiative is part of FINAT’s ‘Four Pillar’ program designed to in- crease the association’s agility in the areas of com- munity networking, knowledge, collaboration and industry advocacy. The Product Carbon Footprint leaflet and video are part of several new releases being presented at Labelexpo Europe. There is a growing demand for objective criteria to measure the environmental impact of labels and packaging products and processes, and to provide data to customers and stakeholders FINAT said. FINAT has initiated a project to provide clarity and give guidance to the label community on the subject of Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). As a first step, at the press conference, on Tuesday 12 September at 12.00 CET at Labelexpo Europe, FINAT launched a brochure and animated video to explain the basics of PCF and LCA, the distinction between the two and the fact that this needs an en- tire value chain approach. The two next steps for 2023-2024 are: • a survey of existing calculation methods current- ly being used in the labels and packaging produc- tion chain (for release in the first quarter of 2024). • a guidance document toward harmonizing the PCF/LCA approach along the label value chain. This will be done in the form of a whitepaper and presentation at the next FINAT Technical Seminar to be held from November 20-22, 2024, in Barce- lona, Spain. The project falls under the scope of FINAT’s new Workstream ‘Collaboration’ that is co-chaired by Board members Alex Knott, Dow, and Uwe Düster- wald, BASF. Eaglewood Technologies Opens New Service Center Eaglewood Technologies has expanded the XPress Roll Cleaning Service into Cincinnati, Ohio, and the surrounding area. The facility will reportedly allow faster service of customer’s Sitexco+ and Sanilox Anilox Cleaning Systems. The new location will allow the technical team to easily reach the East and Southeast areas of the United States.

Bobst Bielefeld To Host CI Flexo Open House Bobst Bielefeld has opened registrations for its Open House 2023 event, set to take place on October 26. The event will feature a full day of demonstrations and discussions at the Bobst Train- ing Center and the Competence Center in Bielefeld, Germany. With a focus on pushing the boundar- ies of packaging, sustainability, and innovation, this event will showcase key technological break- throughs in CI flexo printing. Connected by a theme of “Unwrap the future of flexible packaging”, the event will showcase the Bobst VISION CI flexo press and its capability to run jobs with paper and the Bobst oneBARRIER high barrier monopolymer substrate. Bobst is poised to significantly reduce waste by curbing energy consumption and minimizing ma- terial outputs. Through collaboration with strategic partners, Bobst Bielefeld is addressing the surging market demand for paper and fiber-based packag- ing, and the rising preference for water-based inks in CI flexo printing. The event will include two demonstrations on the VISION CI. Registration for the Bobst Bielefeld Open House event is now open at: https://go.bobst.com/Open- HouseBielefeld23 . MacDermid Graphics Solutions, Atlanta, Georgia, has developed a new process to recycle flexographic printing plates. The patent-pending technology will start trials in North America by the end of the year. “More than 20 million pounds of flexographic plates end up landfilled or used in waste-to-energy processes every year in the United States alone, said Ryan Vest, Director of Innovation at MacDermid. “This compelled us to develop our own technolo- gy to expedite a renewable and sustainable way to eliminate this waste by focusing on total reuse.” MacDermid has partnered with Sustainable Solu- tionz to manage the process of waste removal and recycling. Sustainable Solutionz will bring this pro- cess to market. “Our industry identified a responsibility to repur- pose flexographic plates and corrugated carriers that occupy landfills,” said Gerry Mounsey, Co-Founder of Sustainable Solutionz. “We are pleased to intro- duce meaningful technology to reduce the packag- ing industry’s carbon footprint.” MacDermid Partners Sustainable Solutionz
