Women in Science Chapter One: The Bag Exchange Begins

Harrison Trimble has two students, Sophia Cruz and Joan Sugiarto, who took the initiative to explore an environmental topic of interest to them and work with our community about how they could support the elimination of plastic bags and also support the continued re-use of reusable bags, while aiming to reduce the overconsumption of reusable bags in Canada. They were inspired by the concept of small community libraries that some private citizens create in their neighbourhoods and wanted to create a similar type of exchange system in key areas, like the local library for reusable bags. Their teacher, Meg Stead, provided them with a reference to receive funding from The Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) to support their project. Through this engagement they have been invited to join SCWIST. As members of SCWIST they have been invited to a week-long expo in Toronto in February, all expenses paid, to engage with other women working in the field of science. This is such a great opportunity for our students! We wish them all the best on their personal project and their upcoming trip!
