THE ADVENTURES OF JOSH & JOSH AND HOW MY BEST FRIEND SAVED A PILOT’S LIFE

The first Sunday in August is National Friendship Day, so I think it’s about time I

Florida, but we stayed in touch and saw each other pretty regularly. He’s still the same hardworking, outgoing, adventurous guy today as he was when we were kids. Around the time I started working at Chiro1Source, Josh took a job as a 911 dispatcher in Raleigh. Looking back, this is when he first became a bit of a hero. Answering 911 calls isn’t easy, and it laid the groundwork for something even more amazing he’d do later. When he eventually got his dream job as an air traffic controller and moved to Seattle, the stage was set. So, what am I building up to? Well, not long ago, my buddy saved a guy’s life. As he tells it, he was about to clock out of work when one of the supervisors came running through, asking if anyone there had a pilot’s license. Josh flagged the guy down, and the supervisor said he’d made contact with a pilot in distress. This pilot was flying a small plane, so he was all alone in the cockpit. He wasn’t very experienced — he could only fly in situations where he could see the ground. Unfortunately, that day he’d gotten lost in some clouds over Idaho and couldn’t pick up on visual cues from below. The pilot knew he was out of his depth and was sure something awful was about to happen. Using the calm voice he’d learned as a 911 dispatcher and his knowledge as a pilot, Josh spent almost two hours guiding this scared pilot back to safety. The whole team celebrated when he landed, but only the controllers realized what an amazing thing Josh had pulled off. It turns out the pilot had flown his plane between multiple mountain peaks. He’d missed a collision with one by just 90 feet. His odds of survival were less than 1%, but thanks to Josh, he’s here today. After his close call, the pilot and his family drove seven hours to Seattle in order to thank Josh personally. Looking back on it, it’s pretty crazy how everything in Josh’s life led perfectly to that moment. He had the right knowledge, the right experience, and the right manner to guide that paralyzed pilot to safety. It’s almost enough to make you believe our lives are going according to a plan. I haven’t seen Josh in a few months, but this spring we were able to meet up for a game between Carolina and Duke just before Seattle shut down. It was a blast, and I’m already looking forward to the next time we can catch up. After all, few things in life are more important than a best friend.

2020 AUGUST

introduce you to my best friend, Josh. That’s right — we’ve been friends since we were 4 years old, and

we both have the same first name. As you can imagine, that has been the source of a lot of jokes over the years. As we got older, most of our friends started calling us by our last names to avoid confusion. These days, Josh lives all the way across the country, so it’s not so much of a thing now.

Josh and I met way back in preschool. I broke my leg that year, and he helped

me walk around and keep my spirits up. I remember vividly that at the time, Josh didn’t know how to tie his shoes yet, and I felt like a genius because I’d already mastered the rabbit ears technique. I always joked that I was the quicker learner, even though I was stuck with my leg in a cast. We hit it off and have been best friends ever since. In grade school, Josh and I played basketball together, then eventually we graduated to billiards. When we were 16, Josh got his pilot’s license. He even took me up with him a few times, which was a really cool experience. After graduation, he left for college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in

YOUR ‘CLEAN’ WORKOUT ROUTINE TURN HOUSEHOLD CHORES INTO EFFECTIVE EXERCISE Everyone knows how labor-intensive cleaning can be. A long day of scrubbing down your house is a great way to work your muscles and get your blood pumping, so crank up some tunes, grab a mop, and get ready to transform your cleaning routine into a great workout.

WHAT CHIROP

A LOOK AT BUYIN

Here at Chiro1Source, we have a unique bird’s-eye view of the

chiropractic field. As a supply company, we often pick up on trends when they’re just getting started and can watch as certain products or shopping habits ripple out across the country.

To get physical benefits from cleaning, you need to turn up the intensity of your methods. Exaggerate your motions, pick up your pace, and keep your abs tight and knees flexed. Nearly any chore can be turned into an exercise, but here are some ideas to get you started. • ● VACUUM: Vacuum briskly nonstop for at least 20 minutes, switching arms as you go. For an added challenge, do lunges as you vacuum and remember to keep your toes pointed straight ahead and your knees bent at 90-degree angles. • ● PICK UP: Instead of simply bending over to pick up toys or clothes, do a squat with every item you grab. Remember to use your legs, not your back. You can also do squats while unloading the dishwasher or with any other chore that involves repeated bending. • ● WIPE DOWN: Whether you’re wiping windows or scrubbing appliances, do big, exaggerated arm circles until your muscles start to burn and make sure you’re switching arms as you go.

This is fascinating even in ordinary times, but it’s been particularly interesting to see what’s trending during the COVID-19 pandemic. This month, we thought we’d share some of the insights we’ve picked up on from putting together orders and chatting with our clients. Hopefully, you can use these trends to your advantage to stock up on what you need and increase your direct sales to patients. ● At the start of the pandemic, personal protective equipment (PPE) was in high demand. Now, though, sales of PPE are starting to decrease as clinics finish stocking up on what they need.

• ● COOK: It’s not cleaning, but it’s still a chore with useful downtime. While food is simmering or thawing in the microwave, do some pushups, situps, or planks to get your muscles moving. You can implement dozens of exercises to turn mundane activities into beneficial workouts. Some chores will burn more calories than others, but every bit of activity helps. Now’s the time to work your way to a cleaner house and a healthier you.

Sales for retail items , which decreased early in the pandemic, have started to pick back up. Our clients say

their patients are trying to avoid the crowds at big-box stores, so they’re buying what they need (think handheld massagers, topical creams, etc.) in an environment where they feel safe: the chiropractor’s office!

This spring, gyms across the country shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. People quickly adapted to the change, and soon home exercise routines and equipment were all the rage on social media. According to ResearchAndMarkets.com, fitness equipment sales spiked a whopping 170% during the COVID-19 lockdown.

● Products that alleviate pain and discomfort , like the B-Rite Back cushion we featured last month, are hot right now. People have

Though some gyms have reopened now, odds are good that many of your patients are still doing workouts at home out of caution. One of the trends we’ve seen among our chiropractic clients is an increase in sales of fitness equipment like bands, foam rollers, and exercise balls. If you want to cash in on this home workout trend and fill a need for your patients, we can help! One of our most popular items and our favorite choice for home fitness is the Theraband CLX . This resistance band is unique because it’s made from a series of consecutive loops that run every 8 inches down the length of the band. That means the band can be used without the hassle of handles or a door anchor, because the loops function as handle grips. Another bonus of the loop design is that patients with dexterity issues can use the band even if they can’t make a fist or don’t have good grip strength. The patient can put their arms through the loops and use the band without putting

been sedentary for months, so they’re prioritizing products that make sitting more comfortable or mitigate its side effects.

• ● On the flipside, we’ve seen a jump in the sales of fitness and rehabilitation gear as patients transition from working out at the gym to exercising at home. We predict that even when gyms reopen, this new habit will stick around (read more about that in the other article on this page). • ● Last but not least, pillows have had a real renaissance during the pandemic. In these stressful, difficult times, people are prioritizing comfort and a good night’s sleep. Have you seen any of these trends firsthand? If you have and you’re running low on pillows, fitness gear, or handheld massagers, let us know. We’re always here to help you restock.

strain on their wrists. They can also choose which loops to use, changing the tension of the exercise as they increase or decrease the distance between their hands.

Unlike many wholesale resistance bands, the Theraband CLX comes individually packaged for easy resale. Each band comes with instructions, and the retail box also has a QR code that leads to an online portal. From there, patients can download an app full of exercises and instructions. The packaging looks professional, and the band itself will make it easier for your patients to maintain their health. Offering the Theraband CLX is truly a win- win.
