The Delaware Canal ran from Mauch Chunk (now JimThorpe) to Easton and on to New York City and was busy all but the coldest months
of the year. Canal boats, typical- ly staffed by families who lived on the vessels, transported coal, lumber, slate, iron, cement, and steel frommountain to market, fueling the Industrial Revolu- tion and supplying downstream industries for more than a century. The evening concluded with a tour of the Canal Mu- seum and coffee and dessert on the museum’s porch. ■
