WELCOME TO THE MADNESS! YES, YOU CAN WATCH BASKETBALL DURING YOUR APPOINTMENT
Basketball has been a part of my life since I was a kid. I’ve been a player, a fan, a coach, and sometimes all three at once. I sweated it out on the court through high school and college, and now I coach my son’s fifth/sixth-grade basketball team. Youth Rec league has nothing on the college or the pros, but I love watching those kids practice and helping them hone their skills. It warms my heart to see another group of boys learning the same lessons in cooperation and perseverance that basketball taught me. With all that in mind, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that March Madness is a big event in my house and at my office! Growing up in New Hampshire, I didn’t have a really good college team to root for, so I adopted the North Carolina Tarheels as my team. I pulled for them right up until moving to Connecticut in ‘04, when I figured out quickly that here, it’s UConn or bust! My fandom has evolved with the times, but one thing that hasn’t faded year to year is my love for March Madness. Luckily, PT is a sports-oriented field, so I’m far from the only fan in the clinic. We always celebrate the competition with an office bracket challenge, and if we’re at work on the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament, we try to watch as many games as possible
Despite my love for the season, I haven’t won the office bracket since way back during my very first year with Advanced Physical Therapy CT. Since then, I haven’t even scratched it! Clearly, I had beginner’s luck, but I always have hope when a new bracket rolls around, and this year is no different. Next time you’re in the office, ask me how the bracket is going (unless you can already tell by the dejected look on my face). And if you, a friend, or family member is injured playing a sport you love this spring, remember: My team and I here at March Madness Headquarters can help.
during the day. Don’t be surprised if you come in for your appointment and find us playing basketball on every screen in the office! Once, in 2018, we had one game playing on the office TV, one on the computer, another on a tablet, and yet another on my phone — it was hard to know which device to watch first! I love March Madness time in the clinic because I’ve had so many patients over the years tell me they appreciate that we have the games up on the TV. We’ll often end up talking about player stats during their treatment! Occasionally, basketball is also the reason they’re there in the first place — we get a smattering of ankle sprains, ACL tears, and other knee injuries that happen on the court, though usually nothing as severe as the typical football or soccer injuries.
