Kappa Journal Post-Conclave Issue (Fall 2017)

The Honorable Aaron Ford: President of the Nevada State Senate

Q: How would you describe yourself?

In my adult life, my motivation has always been to be a good husband and father to my wife and sons. I have at- tempted to do that through dedication to my wife and by serving as an example to my sons (and nephew that we raised). I’ve wanted to show them what persever- ance, sacrifice, integrity, and unabashed advocacy look like so that they can be the best men they can be when they reach adulthood. I was introduced to Kappa Alpha Psi as a high school student through a conver- sation with my aunt, who is a member of Delta Sigma Theta. She told me that the way I carried myself reminded her of the Kappas on her college campus who are always “about the business” and, as a result, were always very successful in their lives. When I arrived on the campus of Texas A&M University, I immediately sought out members of our Fraternity to learn Q: How did you find Kappa Alpha Psi ® ?

more about and from them.

I would describe myself as one dedi- cated to helping improve everyone’s lives, beginning in my own house as a husband and father and extending to my clients through my law practice and all Nevadans through my political service. One of my personal mottos is “Speak- ing truth to power from my position of power.” I firmly believe that, often times, change doesn’t occur and things don’t get done because others are waiting on someone else to take the lead. I am unafraid to take the lead. Q: What has motivated you to persevere and thrive throughout your life? My motivation as a young man was to be unlike the negative stereotypes that were attributed to people who came from backgrounds similar to mine. I strived to prove myself not as an exception, but as an example when fair chances were provide and capitalized upon.

Q: What was your mindset during the time that you sought and won sole cus- tody of your first-born son? My mindset was: “Avery is my responsi- bility above all else.” I thought to myself that I would not be like many people I knew who shirked their responsibilities of fatherhood and that, instead, “I must be a man and a father to my son so that he knows what true manhood looks like.” Q: Can you describe how you applied yourself to your educational pursuits? I was motivated to complete all of my education while my son was young so that I would have time to spend with him free from academic constraints sooner than later. I was also motivated to complete my studies so that I could be- gin providing for my family in a manner commensurate with my desire.
