NATIONAL RECLAMATION COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Reclamation is a Central Focus of Kappa's Six-Point Plan
by Paul Robinson
WE DID IT!!! By “we” I am referring to each and every brother who reached out to his line and chapter brothers, the Chapter Polemarchs, Reclama- tion Chairs, and everyday brothers who invited brothers to social func- tions and chapter meetings, and last but certainly not least the 33 rd Grand Polemarch Thomas L. Battles, Jr. Grand Board Members, Province Polemarchs, Province Reclamation Chairmen, and Brothers Henry Jacobs and T. Eugene Connaway who helped architect our plan. Grand Polemarch Battles did not make our job easy when he coined the phrase, “Rebirth, Reclaim, Recommit; By Leav- ing No Brother Behind”. Kappa’s Six Point Plan made Reclamation a cen- terpiece of the 33 rd Administration and required us to think differently about how we bring brothers home to Kappa. Albeit cliché, our approach simply fo- cused on not doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Our battle call became Luke 15:4-6: 4 “What man of you, having a hun- dred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them,
‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’” To gain insight into the situation, we worked with IHQ and discovered over 80,000 inactive members. Further analysis showed that out of every ten members initiated at our collegiate chapters fell only two remained active post-graduation. With the aforemen- tioned statistics, we executed a National Reclamation Survey. The survey was emailed to everyone on Kappa’s email distribution. (Note: If you do not receive emails from Kappa, please con- tact International Headquarters.) We also posted the survey in known closed social media groups to increase our pool of respondents. The survey reaffirmed four top reasons for being inactive: Time, Money, Politics, and Apathy. As we talk to brothers we have to dispel the myth that you cannot be a good Kappa unless you attend every single activity a chapter holds. Being Finan- cial and being Active are two distinct categories; therefore a brother can pay his national dues without attending every chapter meeting. There are broth- ers who cannot attend chapter meetings but can support Guide Right meet- ings, Social Action programs and other chapter-related activities. The same brothers may be challenged with time for regular functions but can support fundraisers and annual events. So when
