Kappa’s Orlando legacy to allow youth to earn certifications and “remember their zip code” W hile the Saturday, July 15 th community health fair that drew hun- dreds and Sunday services at New Covenant Baptist Church set the stage for weeklong conclave events in Orlando, arguably, the biggest pre-83 rd highlight was the fraternity’s community service project. Traditionally, the host chapter for the biannual conclave determines and executes a philanthropic activity on behalf of the fraternity. For the 83 rd Grand Chapter Meeting, cohosts Orlando (FL) and Winter Park (FL) Alumni chapters produced a winner. The Local Planning Committee recommended that Kappa go to the Pine Hills Community. The Pine Hills Community began in 1953 with the construction of Robinswood and Pine Ridge Estates subdivisions. It was one of the first suburbs of Orlando and served as a bedroom community for employees of Martin Marietta (now Lockheed Martin). During the 1960s and 1970s the community rose to a state of prominence in the metropolitan Orlando area as an upper-middle class suburb. However, in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s, the community slipped into decline and experienced significant, steady increases in crime that plagued the community.
