KAPPA NEWS: 105 TH ELDER WATSON DIGGS AWARDEE—SHELDON MCALPIN

S heldon McAlpin’s journey to this point began on November 3, 1954. On that date he was born in Gadsden, Alabama as the first of four children to the late Gilbert Larue McAlpin and Adele McAlpin. He is a Spring 1975 initiate of the Gamma Phi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. on the campus of Alabama A&M University. Brother McAlpin has exhibited leadership skills throughout his academic years. While attending St. Martin de Pores Catholic school his elementary classmates voted him class leader. At the Disque Junior High he became a leader on both the football and basketball teams. At Gadsden High School, he became an active participant in the drama club leading a group of young men in a city-wide play competi- tion. He began his college years at Gadsden State Com- munity College eventually transferring to Alabama A&M University where he was an active member of the business club, student government association and ultimately a mem- ber of our noble clan. After graduation, he began his career with Ford Motor Credit as a customer account representative before being promoted to dealer account manager. He retired after 22 years of dedicated service from Ford before working as an agent with State Farm Insurance. After one year he and a business partner founded Assurance Insurance Agency. For the past 17 years he has turned this small startup company into a thriving and successful business. Brother McAlpin is a member of Park Baptist Church, NAACP, and the McCrory YMCA. He also lends a helping hand to the elderly and visits the sick and shut in. He has taken it upon himself to adopt two senior citizens with no family members; a 93-year-old gentlemen Willie Trevidant who he regularly takes meals and assists with errands and his godmother Ann whom he visits regularly spending valu- able quality time and ensuring that her affairs are in order. Brother McAlpin has received numerous fraternal awards and recognition. He has served at every level of the fraternity in leadership roles. He was Charlotte (NC) Alumni Chapter Man of the Year, Polemarch for the Charlotte (NC) Alumni Chapter, and Charlotte (NC) Alumni Board Member. He has been the Middle Eastern Province Man of the Year, Senior Province Vice Polemarch, Province Polemarch and Province Board Member. Brother McAlpin resides in Charlotte North Carolina with his wife Rosalyn, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and their son Ian a 2012 initiate of the Nu Omicron Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
