DANDELIONS AND A BLUE TRIANGLE CAKE: A LESSON IN PERSPECTIVE FROM MY KIDS

I remember a particularly touching moment I shared with my daughter a couple of years ago that taught me an important lesson about the value of perspective. When she was 4 years old, my daughter loved dandelions. She loved seeing those little yellow weeds poke up through the grass because she knew that soon, they would turn white, which meant she could pick them and blow the seedlings into the breeze as she made wishes. For those of us who spend hours perfecting our lawns, dandelions tend to symbolize annoyance rather than joy. But one day, we were driving past a nearby neighborhood where many lawns were covered with dandelions. While most adults would have assumed those yards were neglected and felt sorry for the people that couldn’t rid themselves of those weeds, my daughter saw things differently. She looked out the window of our car and exclaimed, “Wow, those people are so lucky! Look how many wishes they get!” Her untainted love for dandelions taught me a valuable lesson about perspective and how the simple things in life can sometimes be the most beautiful. While I always try to keep this lesson in mind, I was reminded of it last month during the celebration of my son’s third birthday. My wife and I had asked him multiple times

what he wanted for his birthday, and every time, he said, “a blue triangle cake.” When we asked him what a blue triangle cake was, he explained, “It has wings and fire and flies around the house!” With that description, we were sure he wanted a rocket ship cake, but when we pitched him that idea, he was adamant that what he wanted was a blue triangle cake and nothing else.

culinary contraption all around the house, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him happier. Plus, apparently, it was exactly what he had pictured in his mind because when we asked him if it tasted good, he responded, “Yeah, it tastes just like blue triangle cake.” Sometimes it’s necessary to find a way to look at the world through a child’s eyes. Ads on social media or TV often remind us of all the things that we don’t have and can make us feel like we need a wealth of material possessions, vacations, or experiences to be happy. In reality, it’s often the simple things, like taking a walk in the fresh air, spending time with a good friend you don’t see often, finding a dandelion, or sampling a blue triangle cake, that make all the difference.

Armed with that information, we baked a cake, cut it into a triangle, and covered it with blue frosting. We then took construction paper, cut out wings, glued the wings to Popsicle sticks, and stuck those into the sides of the cake. We also punched little holes in the paper wings so we could loop string through them, which allowed us to flap the wings. Then, on his birthday, we “flew” this “Her untainted love for dandelions taught me a valuable lesson about perspective and how the simple things in life can sometimes be the most beautiful.”

OUR SPRING REFER-A- FRIEND CONTEST HAVE YOU HEARD?

Teacher Appreciation Week runs from May 6–10 this year, and there are plenty of ways students of all ages can thank their educators for everything they do. Being a teacher isn’t an easy job, and the people who make it their profession are passionate about helping kids learn. Depending on how old your child is, they may need a parent’s help in showing their appreciation. Here are a few ways parents and children can appreciate teachers together. THANK-YOU NOTES This gesture is simple and sweet and can be very thoughtful. Telling a teacher what makes them outstanding can often be just as valuable as a gift. Help your child write an appreciative note and then write one yourself. Teachers often have to maintain the happiness of students, administrators, and parents. Your card could relieve some of the stress of that balancing act and let them know that you acknowledge their efforts. A HOMEMADE MEAL Making a homemade meal (or dessert) shows teachers that you went the extra mile to appreciate their hard work. You could make a favorite dish of yours or try to find a new recipe online. Either way, encourage your child to help you with the process so that the meal is truly a gift from both of you. DONATING SCHOOL SUPPLIES Many teachers use their own money to buy school supplies for their classroom. This is just one of the ways teachers go above and beyond on a daily basis, and buying some extra school supplies can help ease that cost. Take your child shopping with you and help them pick out supplies that you know their teacher will appreciate. Your children spend several hours a day with their teachers, so fostering relationships with them is vital. Use this day to help your children understand the importance of teachers, to teach them the power of gratitude, and to encourage them to show respect for everyone who helps them in life. LEARNING TO BE GRATEFUL SOME WAYS TO HELP CHILDREN APPRECIATE THEIR TEACHERS

“I started going to Anderson Dental Care on my wife’s recommendation. My first visit was very informative, and Dr. Brooks showed me the issues I had, describing all of my options in great detail before working with me to come up with a treatment plan. I was particularly impressed with Dr. Brooks’ great ‘chairside manner’ and knowledge. Additionally, my hygienist, Paige, does a great job. She’s gentle yet thorough, very thoughtful, and personable. The rest of the staff are equally personable and thoughtful. I enjoy going there and think others would too!” Referrals are extremely valuable and powerful for our dental office. It gets us more patients like the ones we already know and love. Because they’re so valuable, we want you to be rewarded for trusting us enough to send your family and friends our way. In our April newsletter, we included small cards for you to hand out to your friends and family to refer them to us. If you’ve already handed them out (or even if they’ve been misplaced), stop by the office or send us an email and we’ll get you more. When your referrals start making appointments, you start racking up prizes. Just be sure your friends make their appointments by May 31, 2019, and bring your referral slip with them to the appointment. We always appreciate your referrals, and we hope this shows you just how much we value them. Thank you for helping us serve more people in the Anderson area.

PROM SAFETY 4 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE

Seeing gorgeous dresses, fancy suits, corsages, and boutonnieres pop up in advertisements can only mean one thing: Prom season is here! This time of year, teens are busy choosing the perfect dress or suit to wear, finding a date, making dinner reservations, and preparing for an evening of fun and dance. During this exciting time, give your teens a little encouragement and guidance to ensure they have a safe and memorable evening. CREATE A PLAN Create a plan for prom night, and make sure everyone knows what it is. Your teen should know and communicate with you what time the dance starts, what time it ends, if they’re going anywhere after, and when they’ll be coming home.

they need to reach out to you sometime during the night. Encourage your teen to check in once every few hours, and establish an emergency code to use if they find themselves in trouble. DRIVING You and your teen should also have a plan about the modes of transportation, who’s driving, and how many people your teen is going with. Trusting the driver is important. If you’re hesitant about letting your child be driven to prom, find another way. If your teen is driving the family car, confirm that they will be the only person driving the vehicle. DRESS SAFETY Make sure your teen is dressed comfortably and appropriately to ensure they have a fun night without any accidents. Encourage them to wear comfortable shoes that they can walk and dance in without pain. High heels are fashionable, but they shouldn’t wear heels so high that they may fall and hurt themselves. Whatever your teen decides to wear should be comfortable and hemmed to the appropriate length based on their height.

PHONES Make sure your teen’s phone is completely charged in case

By keeping these safety measures in mind, your teen will have a wonderful and safe evening!

No other month in 2019 begins on a Wednesday or ends on a Friday.

avoided May weddings, it could have been due to the festival of Lemuria, which lasted most of the month and paid tribute to the dead.

An AT&T survey estimated that 122.5 million phone calls to Mom are made on Mother’s Day. Additionally, this day accounts for one-fourth of the flowers purchased for all holidays. About one-third of all American adults bought flowers or plants as gifts for Mother’s Day last year. 5. WE’RE HEADED TO THE EMERALD CITY!
