at Carle Foundation Hospital, in Urbana, Illinois. Moving back to Indiana, Kate joined IU Morgan’s outpatient clinic where she treated children and adults in the outpatient and school settings. Loving the outdoors and traveling to Jackson Hole all her life, Kate always desired living in the West. In June 2016, Kate moved to Jackson after her husband, Dr. Joe Wienman, accepted a veterinary position at Jackson Animal Hospital. Kate joined the St. John’s Medical Center family in November and now sees adults and children in the acute, sub-acute, long-term care, home health, and outpatient settings. When not at work, you may see Kate at the yoga studio, on the ski slopes, or hiking trails in the area with her husband, Joe, and Australian Shepherd, Taggart. Kate also enjoys game nights, traveling, reading, and a good meal. She is happy to call Jackson home and hopes to make a positive impact on our community. Why do I love being an SLP? Growing up I always knew I would choose a profession in which I could positively, and directly, impact an individual’s life. Becoming a Speech-Language Pathologist has been the perfect fit for me! As an SLP, I have the opportunity to build wonderful working relationships with clients and their families. Working with clients with various disorders, of all ages, and diverse backgrounds can be challenging. It requires creativity and constant learning but results in gaining invaluable new perspectives. As a therapist, my best days are also my client’s best days: when they achieve a milestone or goal! All it may take is a smile, a sound, a word, a swallow, or a memory and that is enough for me!

Kate Wienman, M.A., CCC-SLP, attended Butler University, in Indianapolis, for her undergraduate work where she majored in communication disorders and enjoyed cheering on the Dawgs! Kate attended Indiana University for her graduate work. She completed externships at The Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center. After graduation in 2011, Kate joined a rehab team at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. There, she developed a strong interest in dysphagia and cognitive- communicative treatment with stroke and TBI clients. She continued to work in the acute, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient settings

WHAT IS A SPEECH THERAPIST?

Speech-language pathologists (SLP), or speech therapists, are the only health care professionals specifically educated and prepared to evaluate and treat children and adults with speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing problems. They address decreases in swallowing, cognitive, and/or communicative function followingbrain injury, stroke, and brain tumors, or coinciding with progressive conditions such Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. SLPs help people develop effective speaking and listening skills, improve loudness or quality of voice,

preserve the pleasures associated with eating, or re-train cognitive skills, such as memory and word- finding. The speech therapists serve our community within multiple settings, including acute care at SJMC, subacute and long-term care at The Living Center, outpatient through Teton Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, and SJMC Home Health and Hospice. UNDERSTANDING STROKE &APHASIA

Aphasia is a language disorder that affects the ability to communicate. It’s most often caused by strokes that occur in areas of the brain that control speech and language. What are the effects of aphasia? Aphasia does not affect intelligence. Stroke survivors remain mentally alert, even though their speech may be jumbled, fragmented or impossible to understand. Some survivors continue to have: • Trouble speaking, like “getting the words out” • Trouble finding words • Problems understanding what others say • Problems with reading, writing or math • Inability to process long words and infrequently used words How does it feel to have aphasia? People with aphasia are often frustrated and confused because they can’t speak as well or understand things the way they did before their stroke.Theymayactdifferentlybecauseofchanges in theirbrain. Imagine lookingat theheadlinesof the morningnewspaperandnotbeingable to recognize the words. Or think about trying to say “put the car in the garage” and it comes out “put the train in the house” or “widdle tee car ungsender plissen.” Thousands of alert, intelligent men and women are suddenly plunged into a world of jumbled communication because of aphasia. Are there different types of aphasia? Yes, there are several forms of aphasia. They

include: • Global aphasia: People with this aphasia may be completely unable to speak, name objects, repeat phrases or follow commands. • Broca’s aphasia: The person knows what they want to say, but can’t find the right words (can’t get the words out). • Wernicke’s aphasia: A person with this aphasia canseldomunderstandwhat’sbeingsaidorcontrol what they’re saying. How can family and friends help? The stroke survivor and their family members will need the help and support of a doctor, counselor and speech pathologist. It’s a good idea for family and friends to: • Be open about the problem so people can understand. • Always assume that the stroke survivor can hear.Checkunderstandingwithyes/noquestions. •Setupadaily routine for thepersonwithaphasia that includes rest and time to practice skills. • Use sentences that are short and to the point. • Keep the noise level down and stand where the survivor can see you. • Remember to treat the stroke survivor as an adult and let him or her share in decision-making. No one likes to be ignored. Include the survivor in your conversation. • Help the stroke survivor cope with feelings of frustration and depression. • Be patient with the person with aphasia. Give

them the time they need to try to speak and get their point across to you. This not only respects their dignity, but makes it less stressful for them when communicating. HOW CAN I LEARN MORE? 1.
