and the results from it. In this sorrow ing they are like their Lord (cf. John 11:35). They are the meek of the earth, not opposing God’s will, nor maintain ing their, own rights (cf. Psa. 37:11; Num. 12:3; Matt. 11:28, 29; Gal. 5:22, 23). They hunger and thirst (the strongest natural desires) after right eousness. Hence the blessedness de pends upon character, not upon condi tions or circumstances. Observe also the outward character (vs. 7-9). The “blessed” are the mer ciful, showing grace to others, and so obtain, not earn, mercy for themselves (cf. Heb. 2:17; Jude 21; 2 Pet. 1:4; Psa. 19:11). They are the pure in heart, where the springs of action are found, and this purity includes both single ness of eye and clearness of vision (cf. John 8:29; Psa. 16:8). They make for peace, being peacemakers, like their God. It is not peace among nations, of peace between individuals that is here in view, but peace from and with and of God (cf. Col. 1:20; Rom. 5:1; Acts 10:36; Éph. 2:13-17; 2 Cor. 5:20). It should be noted that these are not thiiigs to do but to be. Being is more

DEVOTIONAL READING: Psa. 24. Outline and Exposition I. T heir C haracter (1-12) ; ■ UR LORD was speaking, not as in the kingdom already set up, but as announcing its coming. The kingdom referred to is His millen nial reign upon the earth. He was speaking to His disciples, those who had heard and responded to John the Baptist’s message of repentance. His purpose in this so-called “Sermon on the Mount” was to announce the prin ciples, laws, and character of citizens, in His kingdom which He would set up if they would receive it. He was riot giving the way of salvation; a gospel of salvation from this “sermon” must of necessity be a thing of legality, a gospel upon which the curse Of God abides (cf. Gal. 1:6-10). Note, first, the inward character (vs. 3-6). Our Lord says, “Blessed are,” not “Blessed who are trying to be.”- The “blessed” are the poor in spirit who, oontrary ;to nature, recognize .their proper humble place. The parallel is seen in Isaiah 66:2, and the contrast in Revelation 3:17. They iriourn be cause of the. sinfulness around them
