If the old Paul no longer lived but Christ lived in him, we can expect him to act like his indwelling Guest. Was his Lord consumed with love for the lost? Then it is not surprising to hear Paul saying, “I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren.” “Neither count I f my life dear unto myself.” Did Christ live a life of unappreciated self-sacrifice ?. His bondslave likewise partakes of His spirit and says, “I will very gladly spend and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.” —J. Oswald Sanders. FOURTEENTH DAY Apart . “And when he had sent the multi tudes away, he went up into a moun tain apart to pray: and when the even ing was come, he was there alone” (Matt. 14:23). Every ministry, every form of Chris tian service which brings us into con tact with crowds, which keeps us busy at tasks which tax our powers, must be sustained by solitary communion with God. Our Lord had been pained by the worldly conceptions of the mul titudes and the disciples. He must have been exhausted. He wanted something to allay excitement and to still the atmosphere. He knew where to find it. He shows us where we can find it, too. We can find peace and calm and rest in the place of prayer . . . It will fill our souls with a deep in ward peace, j—A. W. Parsons. FIFTEENTH DAY Gentleness “The meekness and gentleness of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:1). ‘.'The fruit of the Spirit is .. . gentleness.” (Gal. 5:22). Gentleness seems to be chiefly a “fruit of the lips” and manner flowing from thé long suffering of the heart; while “longsuffering” means having just cause for anger, yet not being angry. Gentleness comes in as a gra cious adjunct, or as a smaller fruit of the same species. Gentleness will check the hasty word and substitute a soft one; gentleness will smooth over a thou sand tiny crookednesses. Gentleness is one of the mightiest powers for daily life.—Selected. SIXTEENTH DAY Faith’s Answer “She answered, It is well”. (2Ki.4:26). An omnipotent, omniscient and all- merciful Lord’Will surely do all things well with those who are His and who trust under the shadow of His wings. . . . Such a faith the Shunammite wo man manifested. Her beloved child had died. . . The servant of Elisha said unto her, "Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child?” Then she answered, “It is well.” Yet there was an aching heart, a dis tressed mind; but faith made her say, “It is well.”—Selected.

SEVENTEENTH DAY He Knows the Way “He led them forth by the right way” (Psa. 107:7). It is a beautiful saying from one of our poets, who speaking of our birth says: ‘‘Every soul leavès port with sealed orders.” We cannot know whither we are going, or what we are to do till the time comes for breaking the seal! But I can tell you something more beautiful than this. Every regenerated soul sets out on its voyage with an Invisible Captain on board, who knows the nature of our sealed orders from the outset, and who will shape our entire voyage according ly, if we will only let Him. —A. J. Gordon. EIGHTEENTH DAY When You’re Jostled—What? “While the King sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof” (Cant. 1:12), Spikenard fulfills its mission without being either seen or heard. Its sweet fragrance is pervasive and unmistak able. . . . O. R. Palmer of Philadelphia once told of a striking fact concerning this plant. It is said that in the coun try where 'spikenard grows in the for ests, if a wild animal passing through should jostle the spikenard, the frag rance fills the whole place round about. And the pastor asked, “If you are jos tled, does the fragrance of spikenard float out from your life?” —Sunday< School Times. n in e t e e n t h day His Attractiveness “And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us” (Psa. 90:17).
