NOTES on Christian Endeavor By MARY G. GOODNER

in your spirit which are God’s” (1 Cor. 6 : 20 ).

OCTOBER 1, 1939 COMMITTING OURSELVES TO CHRIST R omans 12:1-8 Meditation on the Lesson In the first portion of this Epistle to the Romans, the apostle has been laying deep foundations in doctrinal statements and facts to be believed and accepted. He has shown that no Christian living is possible apart from Christian believ ing, and that the Center of that belief is Christ Himself: “For other founda tion can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 3:11). Faith is fundamental, foundational, first. But when faith has been exer cised, to the acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, then the believer is enjoined to right living. Some one has said, “Orthopraxy [right action or practice] is essential as well as orthodoxy [right belief].” How important it is that our bodies shall be yielded to God! An old Ger man schoolmaster apostrophized his body thus: “I go with you three times a day to eat; you must come With me three times a day to pray.” If our bodies are yielded to Christ, we can truly say, as Paul did, “I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection” (1 Cor. 9:27). This condition is at tained.. progressively. It calls for the repeated —yes, continual — yielding of brain, eye, tongue, hands, feet, and every other member, to Christ. “How can this be done?” you ask. The text tolls us: “By the mercies of God” (Rom. 12:1). When we contem plate the great love which God mani fested toward us when He gave His Son, we will be constrained to offer ourselves freely to Him. If we will let His love possess us, He will sway our wills into line with His own' perfect will. “Ye are not your own . . . ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and G if ts R e c e iv ed during July, 1939 Honor Roll ............... -......339.15 “Go Forward” Campaign— 1,472.60 China ............ i.................... . 385.00 General Fund _________ _ 6,152.68 $8,349.43 The Bible Institute of Los Angeles In co rp o ra ted

Helps for the Leader I. G iving O nly "G ood T hings " A lady who had an only child once said to Mrs. Pearsall Smith, “I do not dare to pray, ‘Thy will be done,’ be cause I am afraid God will take away my little boy, or will send me some other heavy trial.” Mrs. Smith replied: “Suppose your child should come to you and say, ‘I want to be and do just what you de sire today.’ Would you say to yourself, ‘Now is my opportunity to make this child do all the disagreeable duties I want done: I will just take advantage of his willingness to please me by cut ting off his pleasures today and keeping him at hard discipline’?” “No, no,” said the mother. “I would give him the best day I could possibly plan.” “And can you think that God is less just and loving than you?” —The Quiver. II. T he R ight O rder After one of his great sea fights, a French officer was brought into the presence of Lord Nelson. He went up to the great admiral and held out his hand. Nelson drew back. “Give me your sword,” he said, “and then I will take your hand.” Thus it is also in the soul’s relation to the Lord Jesus. First of all, “Present your bodies” to the Saviour.—G. B. F. Hallock. For all of us who long to become soul-winners and to influence others for Christ, this lesson will abound in both inspiration and example. Each contact mentioned in the record was a trifle different from the others. But there was similarity in this point: Each dis ciple came as a result of some believer’s testimony or by personal invitation. An drew and possibly John followed Jesus as the result of hearing John the Bap tist proclaim: “Behold the Lamb of God.” Andrew found his own brother Simon and gave to him the ringing testimony, “We have found the Mes- sias.” Real assurance of faith added force to his words—then “he brought him to Jesus.” In the next instance, we see Jesus Himself finding Philip, and drawing him OCTOBER 8, 1939 INFLUENCING OTHERS FOR CHRIST J ohn 1:35-45 Meditation on the Lesson
