I am aware that repeated scien tific studies link cigarette smok ing to lung cancer, heart disease, and other crippling and frequent ly fatal illnesses. Yet I smoke. I admit that it is more logical to believe the warnings of the scientists who are principally con cerned with my health than the disclaimers of the tobacco com panies which are principally con cerned with my money. Yet I smoke. I know that not only common sense but moral principles dictate that I should reject from my body, the temple of the Holy Spirit, poisonous substances which are menacing to health and even to life itself. Yet I smoke. I recognize that it is my duty as a Christian to be sensitive to the effect of my conduct on others — to refrain from any action which cannot be performed to the glory of God or which might detract from my Christian witness — to adhere to the rule, “When in* doubt, don’t.” Yet I smoke. I confess that if eating spinach or drinking milk involved these objections, I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to give them up. I am aware that my “ free” will is being manipulated by cynical Madison Avenue motivation ex perts — by the “ smart” set I either consciously or subcon sciously seek to impress — by the image of the “ square” I so stu diously avoid — by the compul sion of the habit itself. Yet I smoke. I know that my decisions should be based upon what I honestly feel to be the will of God, in the light of careful thought and earnest prayer. I ad mit that I have failed to follow this formula with regard to my use of tobacco. I see all this as through a smoke-clouded glass darkly. Yet I smoke.
