THE WYCLIFFE BIBLE COMMENTARY

Church and Spate in The New Testament By J. Marcellus Kik

quietly replied: “ If 1 wasn’t a mis sionary, I wouldn’t be in linguistics.” W ith Heart card Mind, is an elabora tion of his profound conviction that the Lord who commands us to love Him with all our heart and with all our mind meant it and that it is possi ble. Dr. Pike was trained in theology before linguistics. His theology is Bi blical and conservative. His statement of it is refreshingly different at times. W ith Heart and Mind is not a logical treatise developing the theme, but a series of chapel talks given first to missionary linguistic students at the University of Oklahoma and showing a synthesis, on the personal level of the author’s own experience and faith, of scholarship and devotion. This book was not written in a rocking-chair, but in the intensely ac tive program of a man who directs research programs in linguistics at the University of Michigan, the Sum mer Institute of Linguistics with six annual missionary linguistic training courses on three continents, linguistic and Bible translation workshop ses sions and a growing corps of trained consultants serving workers in 285 different languages. He teaches a Sun day school class of university stu dents and is past president of the Linguistic Society of America. Pastors will find startlingly fresh sermonic applications of old truth. Students struggling with what seems a conflict of science and faith will be helped by one who holds sound con victions in both and has not dodged the problems. The author is frank and honest in stating his own weak nesses and conflicts. His total com mitment to Jesus Christ, to evangel ism, and to the Bible translation task of the phurch for tribal groups with out the gospel in their own tongue, is a missionary challenge. A few years ago the editor o f the International Journal of American Linguistics warned his readers that to keep abreast of current linguistic re search they would have to learn the terminology used by Dr. Kenneth L. Pike and applied by his missionary colleagues of the Summer Institute of Linguistics and Wycliffe Bible Trans lators. In the evangelical world we

The title is somewhat misleading. The booklet is not a study of church and state in the New Testament as such, but a study of it in the light of contemporary events in the United States. From this point of view the book is disappointing, because it does not justify its title. The author’s position is that he is opposed to the church’s activity in bringing political pressures to bear upon legislation. He is, however, in accord with the right and duty of the Christian to speak, act, and vote as an individual. The work of the church is not to dominate poltitics or procure legislation but to present the Gospel. Church and state are operat ing in two different spheres. Each has its own area of responsibility and should not encroach upon each other. The best of all relationships is one in which there is a free church in a free state. A theological conservative will ap preciate the author’s emphasis upon the proper sphere of the church. He may be somewhat concerned over the author’s attitude toward the 18th Amendment, which is mentioned fre quently in such a small book. The theological liberal will probably not be swayed by the author’s arguments, and undoubtedly will be displeased with his references to the Federal and National Councils’ misplaced empha ses upon united legislative action. The interested reader will find food for thought but also disappointment in the development in the light of the title. One of the best parts of the trea tise is the fine analysis contained in the Preface. 46 pages; paper, Presby terian and Reformed Publishing Co., Philadelphia, Pa.; $ .75.—Reviewed by Dr. James Christian, Dean, Biola College.
