K wong , M.D. served as the resident physician and sur geon in the British Methodist Hospi tal in Kukong, China, prior to his coming to the Hollywood Presbyteri an Hospital and joining the faculty of Biola School of Missionary Medi cine. The fantastic story that follows is truly a story of miracles of God’s grace in dealing with this young 27- year-old medic. Coming from a solid Christian home, Dr. Kwong had fall en into the natural complacency and enjoyment of success as the superin tendent in charge of a teaching hos pital in Kukong. However, with con siderable rudeness and shock, this sense of well being was suddenly obliterated with the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent evacuation of all American and Brit ish personnel. Kukong was rapidly becoming the war-time capitol of Kwangtung prov ince in South China. As the Japanese advanced, the work in the hospital accelerated feverishly. Air attacks were but the prelude to a large-scale assault. With helpless patients in his charge, frightened employees who looked to his leadership, nurses who needed his courage and protection, Dr. Kwong’s complacency disappeared and he threw himself completely up

After passing through many horrible ordeals as a prisoner, Dr. Kwong was finally released, given a medical pass and ordered to confiscate all medical supplies needed to develop a huge Army-Civilian hospital in Kukong. The doctor could not turn traitor to his own people. He returned to the hospital and shared the news of the Japanese offer with his staff and im mediately eight people stepped for-
on the strength and wisdom of the Lord. In this time of utter helpless ness, the nurses, staff, patients and doctor alike turned to God in prayer. Slowly but miraculously, they felt the burden lift and in spite of tur moil, strife and slaughter, there was an awareness of the Lord’s strength being made perfect in their weakness. Kukong surrendered to the relent less enemy and all the Chinese be came prisoners, but God was working
