Hawkesbury OPP put the brakes on two drivers racing along the highway, in Champlain Township, last month. Police patrols on Highway 417, near Champlain Township, intercepted two drivers on separate occasions and arrested them for excessive speed in a posted 110-kilometre- an-hour zone. February 11, around 2 pm, a 24-year-old Montréal man was charged under the Onta- rio Highway Traffic Act with racing a motor vehicle at excessive speed, also known as “stunt driving”. Police radar scanner clocked the driver’s car at 192km/h on the highway, where the maximum speed posted is 110km/h. On February 20, around 2:30 p.m., a 21-year-old man from South Huron was caught and charged for stunt driving on the highway. OPP radar scanner reading for his vehicle was 152 kilometres an hour in a posted 110km/h zone. In both cases, the drivers had their licences suspended on site for seven days and their vehicles impounded for seven days. Both men are also scheduled for an April 2 provincial traffic court appearance in L’Orignal. Impaired driving Police have charged a 42-year-old man from Gore, Québec, with impaired driving. He was operating a motor vehicle while having a blood-alcohol level exceeding 80 milligrams, and driving while having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. The charges resulted from police inves- tigation of a complaint, February 23, about a suspected impaired driver on Highway 34, in Champlain Township. The accused had his vehicle impounded for seven days and his driver’s licence suspended on site for 90 days. He was scheduled for a March 11 provincial court appearance in L’Orignal.
