If you have been a lawful permanent resident and living in the U.S. for several years, you may be in the best place to apply for naturalization, aka official U.S. citizenship. As people set their resolutions for the new year, one of the biggest goals for permanent residents is to apply for naturalization. It’s a huge achievement and one worth setting. The road to naturalization is long and takes a lot of work, but when you take the time and make it a priority, it is completely within your reach. OUR GOAL OF NATURALIZATION • You must be 18 years or older. • You must be a permanent resident for five years. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, the requirement is three years. • You must live in the U.S. for at least 30 months — of a total possible 60 months — during your five years as a permanent resident. If you are married to a citizen, then you must have spent 18 months in the U.S. during the last three years. • You must live in the state or district where you begin the naturalization process for three months before applying. • You must be able to read, write, and speak basic English. • You must be knowledgeable of the fundamentals of U.S. history and the U.S. government. • You must be able to show you are a person of good moral character — having no criminal record. • You must not be in default for any prior years of back taxes. • You must be willing to support the U.S. Constitution, to perform civilian or military service if required, and be willing to take the oath of allegiance to the U.S. A lot of people want to start the naturalization process, but they put it off because it takes time and commitment. However, because the process lasts about one year from start to finish, making it a goal this month can mean you will complete the process next January. What a great way that would be to start 2020. You can then register to vote and help change the future of our country. It is our responsibility to vote for those who cannot.
