GLOSSARY OF TERMS
ACADEMIC YEAR - the period of time occurring between the first day of July and ending on the 30 th day of June, during which a student must meet the educational requirements equivalent to an instructional term as provided in W. Va. Code §18-8-1. COACH - county board/governing body contracted or approved facilitator of any secondary school athletic team. COMMISSION/WVSSAC - West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission CONTEST or GAME – one or more of the following conditions are present: previous agreement, advertisement, score and/or time kept, spectators present, regulation or modified rules used, coverage appearing in local media, sufficient number of students to form teams, admission charged, and/or contest officiated by registered officials. ENROLLMENT – the date on which a student makes official notice to enroll in a school, as established by the local county board of education. Official notice, as a minimum, is defined as an intent to enroll form that is signed by both the parent/guardian and the principal/principal/designee. Unless official notice is provided as set forth above, the day after a student completes the last day of elementary school and/or middle school, he/she is considered enrolled at the feeder middle/high school for purposes of interscholastic athletic eligibility. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES - nonacademic activities such as interscholastic athletics, student government, class officers, marching band that is not a part of the curricular band, and clubs which are not closely related to identifiable programs/areas of study. FACULTY MEMBER - one who has a full-time teacher permit as defined by W. Va. 126CSR136, Policy 5202, Minimum Requirements for the Licensure of Professional/Paraprofessional Personnel and Advanced Salary Classification. FEEDER SCHOOL - the school(s) designated by the county board of education/governing body as the school of attendance prior to entrance into the high school. GRID-O-RAMA/SOCCER-O-RAMA – must adhere to rules of Preview and Scrimmage (see definitions). IMAGE – means a picture or video of the student athlete LIKENESS - means a physical, digital, or other depiction or representation of the student athlete. MEMBER SCHOOL - a school that is a member of the WVSSAC. NAME - the first, middle, last name, or nickname of the student athlete when used in a context that reasonably identifies the student athlete with particularity, which may include a team member, symbol, logo, or brand. PARTICIPATION – Attending and/or participating in any manner during a WVSSAC established sport season, including, but not limited to: practice, a try out, dressing by not entering a contest, etc. PRACTICE - A sport specific, organized activity under the supervision of a county board of education approved coach within a WVSSAC established sport season. PRINCIPAL - the individual charged with supervision, management, and control of a secondary school.
