MOLD AND MILDEW STAIN REMOVERS A season’s worth of exposure to stains, moisture, grit and grime, combined with extreme sun and radical temperature changes will do a job on your boat’s upholstery, cushions and canvas. Rather than let this problem fester during the winter layover months, I prefer to nip it in the bud and clean off any mold or mildew stains before tucking my ride away for the year. Some of these chemistries are spray on and wipe off, while others require mixing a ratio of it with water to do the job. Whichever method you find most useful, this is the easier way to solve the mold/mildew stain problem before it gets out of hand.
VINYL AND LEATHER UPHOLSTERY CLEANERS AND PROTECTANTS
What I described in the previous section applies equally here. Once you get the mold and mildew stains off, it’s advisable to put down a layer of protection to keep your cushions and upholstery looking like new for the long haul
METAL POLISH I prefer to remove whatever rust, corrosion, salt and blood/bait stains from my boat’s metal surfaces before the winter layoff, versus letting it sit for months in a nasty state and create a larger maintenance challenge come springtime.
WATER ANTIFREEZE
Water system antifreeze is designed protect vessels from freezing temperatures, offering cold weather and corrosion protection for both potable water systems, plumbing and engine components. Most of the name brands are made with pure virgin propylene glycol, which is non-toxic, reducing residual smells and tastes. Advanced inhibitors guard against corrosion, protecting metal engine components and seals including aluminum, brass and copper. This antifreeze typically is sold in convenient one gallon containers and is ready to use
straight from the bottle. Most chemistries are alcohol-free to prevent evaporation and maintain protection levels throughout the winter. The dye used in these products allows easy detection when antifreeze has flowed through systems and aids in flushing it out during spring maintenance.
