A LOOK AT A CHALLENGING CASE

Every patient is different and requires a distinct treatment plan to address their specific needs. More often than not, the treatment is relatively straightforward, whether a patient desires veneers or wishes to correct a lifelong issue. However, there are cases that present unique challenges that require a dedicated team to solve. For instance, there was one case that was featured on the TV show “The Doctors.” The 30-year-old man lived a healthy lifestyle, but even so, he developed a rare genetic disease that primarily affected his legs. After several tests and misdiagnoses, he was given medication to manage the pain and his condition. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of the medication was severe dry mouth. Many medications cause dry mouth, but in the case of this patient, it was particularly troublesome. As a result, the dry mouth led to rampant tooth decay and cavities. This highlights saliva’s important role in managing decay-causing bacteria in the mouth. The decay became so significant that the patient began losing teeth. At the same time, he was in pain and it was difficult for him to walk. His health was declining and he needed a solution, which brought him to us. When we consulted with him, he only had two teeth remaining, and the roots of his missing teeth had become infected. This presented us with a challenge: The infection had to be dealt with before we moved forward. Complicating matters, the patient was on multiple medications, including blood thinners. When it comes to oral surgery, blood thinners present a challenge all their own. We had to consider the risks to the patient if he continued or discontinued the medication. If we took him off blood thinners, he would be at risk for stroke, heart attack, and lung embolism.

efforts to repair this patient’s smile to get him a step closer to living a normal life once more.

In the end, we decided to temporarily discontinue the blood thinner. During surgery, he was closely monitored for signs of blood clots and other complications. We extracted the decayed teeth, cleared the infection, and installed implants, successfully restoring his smile. Despite the obstacles this case presented, through meticulous planning and comprehensive analysis, we helped a patient whose initial outlook appeared grim. We addressed significant decay and restored a healthy, happy smile. It’s a testament to not only the skill and know-how of the involved professionals, but also the advances in oral health care. This patient and his case are sources of hope and inspiration; and it shows that even the most monumental challenges can be conquered.

Journaling is both a chance to organize your thoughts and an opportunity for therapeutic release, but traditional journaling isn’t for everyone. If you hit a wall every time you try to put pen to paper or worry you’ll have to burn your journal when you’re done, there are other ways you too can enjoy the benefits of journaling. WRITE LETTERS TO YOUR KIDS Framing journal entries as letters to children can help provide a starting point for you. Many parents journal like this with the intent of letting their kids one day read the letters, but that doesn’t have to be your end goal. Nor do you have to write to your kids. You can address your letters to your spouse, a close friend, your mother, or even a loved one who’s passed away. RECORD QUOTES Quotes are special because they capture a profound feeling in just a few words. By recording some of your favorite quotes, you’re able to capture those feelings and reflect on why they resonate with you. Include quotes from historical figures, books, song lyrics, something you heard waiting in line at the coffee shop, or one of the “darndest things” your kids say. GO DIGITAL Apps like Day One for iOS or Journey for Android are perfect for recording your thoughts quickly. Journaling apps are as easy as scrolling down social media, but can be locked for your eyes only. Integrate written segments with photos to create entries you can reflect on from your phone, tablet, or computer. There are as many reasons to journal as there are options for alternative journaling. Whatever you decide, just make sure it’s something you’ll enjoy doing every day. Happy journaling!

THE TRUTH ABOUT SPARKLING WATER The Evidence Is in the Effervescence

More people are drinking sparkling water than ever before. Health-conscious individuals are turning away from sugar-filled sodas and juices, replacing themwith sparkling alternatives such as La Croix and Perrier.

However, if consumed regularly over a long period of time, sparkling water may have an erosive effect on tooth enamel, but for the vast majority of the population, this is a nonissue. The important takeaway from JADA’s study is that sugar-free, sparkling waters are a much healthier alternative to soda, juice, and other beverages high in sugar and acid content. And that includes beverages marketed as diet. The next time you reach for a bubbly and refreshing sparkling water, you can know you’re making a good choice not just for your body, but for your teeth as well.

We know sparkling water is better for our bodies, but is it safer for our teeth?

Sodas and juices are highly acidic. Combine that with sugar, and you have the ultimate recipe for tooth decay. Remove the sugars and acidic ingredients, such as citric acid, and you’re left with a very different beverage. A 2016 study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) examined the erosive properties of common beverages. The study found that sports drinks, for example, were “extremely erosive,” while researchers characterized sparkling water as “minimally erosive” when it came to the impact on tooth enamel. Dr. Edmond Hewlett, a professor with the UCLA School of Dentistry and consumer advisor with the American Dental Association, says that, sugars aside, the acidity in sparkling water is significantly less than typical sodas and juices. The carbon dioxide bubbles in sparkling water, which becomes carbonic acid when consumed, is weak by itself. It isn’t a danger to tooth enamel.

Yellowstone: Where the Wild Things Are

Where the Wild Things Are

Or if it’s majesty and exploration you’re itching for, hike one of the many trails along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. The views, with clay cliff faces and tree-covered mountains in every direction, are unlike any other. Also, be sure to investigate the Grand Prismatic Spring, which, besides its otherworldly rainbow waters, is known for being the largest hot spring in the U.S.

The Unspoiled Natural Majesty of Yellowstone National Park

For many, though, the biggest draw of the park is the wildlife. Yellowstone is home to the largest bison population on public land. It houses more mammals than anywhere else in the lower 48 states, 150 species of birds, and huge populations of native fish, to name a few. Just driving around the park, you’re apt to see moose, deer, elk, mountain goats, and, if you’re lucky, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or wolves. Go boating, catch a fish, scale a mountain, ride a horse — the things to do vary as much as the breathtaking landscape. If you’re looking for an affordable, relaxed, and wide-open family vacation this summer, Yellowstone is a no-brainer.

This summer, skip the expensive hustle and bustle of an overcrowded theme park. After a vacation like that, you’ll feel like you need another.

As far as getaway destinations go, Yellowstone National Park, sprawling across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, is a little more expansive. More than 3 million visitors flock to its astonishing peaks, multicolored pools, and dramatic geothermal geysers each year, but as you travel across Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres, it’s unlikely you’ll see much of them. And the sheer variety of unparalleled activities to explore means fun for the whole family.

Make sure to check out Old Faithful, the most famous geothermal geyser in the world, with eruptions averaging a whopping 130 vertical feet.
