The papers repo rt th a t Louis B ran dies, now justice of th e U. S. supreme court, is the probable first governor of th e new Judea. If th e English agree to th e plan of a Z ionist governor gen eral, Justice B randies is generally con sidered as the most logical man. The Jew ish congress, th e counter movement to th e Z ionist organization, proposes nationalization of Jews in whatever country they reside and th a t they be given the rig h t of rep resen ta tion. These demands are being pressed upon th e peace congress. It would look as though they are already well rep re sented in all countries. Some have recently been trying hard to prove th a t th e English and American peoples are descended from th e lost trib es of Israel. The idea is fanciful and unscrip tu ral. The language has no affinity w ith the Hebrew, th e m anners and customs have not th e sligh test re semblance and the physiognomy is the very opposite. Again, history shows th a t our pedigree is to be traced to Ja p h eth and modern discoveries in eth nology confirm this. A daily paper says “The dream of the renationalization of P alestine which has lived for two thousand years in the h earts of th e Jews, is fast entering th e realm of reality .’’ They m ight have added, “When thou seest the sign of th e fig tree, th en look up, for redem ption draw eth nigh.” Recent repo rts say th a t over 130,000 Jews are enrolled in the American Z ionist organization. An effort is being made to get 1,000,000 before P resident Wilson retu rn s to th is country. Jew ish papers repo rt th a t 20,000 Jews in Jerusalem are starving. The
American Z ionist organization has been collecting funds for th e ir relief. Dr. Geo. Simons, a Methodist m is sionary in P etrog rad testified before the U. S. senate th a t th e m ajo rity of bol- sheviki leaders in Russia have come from the east side of New York. He gave the names of tw enty-nine such leaders. A m arked sp irit of anti-sem itism is being agitated in New York. A paper has been published condemning all Jews as bolshevists and denouncing Christians who show them selves friend ly w ith th e Jews. Reformed Rabbis of America sent a cablegram to P residen t W ilson asking th a t he hinder th e progress of th e Zion ist movement. The Jew ish congress denounced th e advocates of Zionism as traito rs. Many Jews are greatly distressed over th e fact th a t in spite of th e p rin ciples of modern democracy, th e peace congress has refused to receive the Jew ish people as members of th e league of nations. Some blame th e Zionist leaders and others the delays of th e Jew ish congress a t Philadelphia for the u n fo rtun ate failure. The London Times says: T h at a. “ national home” for th e Jew s is urgently needed is adm itted. A case very much in point and of present-day importance, says th e w riter of th e article in question, is th e position of thousands of poor Jews who have seen th e ir property lost in th e recent fire a t Salonika, where 80,000 of the popula tion were Hebrews. W hat are these people to do if they desire to em igrate? It seems probable th a t th e present places of imm igration for Jews—Amer-
