CONTENTS

Dear Friends, On behalf of City of Irvine Senior Services, we wish you a happy and healthy new year! The start of a new year brings new opportunities. I encourage you to browse through this issue of Irvine Connection for Older Adults to learn about all the programs and services available to the older adult community. Discover your green thumb with Rancho Gardening Workshops (see Page 12), go on an excur- sion (see Page 12), or learn something new at one of the weekly Education Lectures (see Page 10). Whether you want to try something new, rediscover an old hobby, or just meet new people, Irvine Senior Services has something to fit your needs. Have you visited the Keen Center for Senior Resources? The Keen Center provides up-to-date resources and information to help navigate through some of the chal- lenges associated with aging and caregiving. Offering a variety of consultations, support services, and support groups, the Keen Center has become the community’s destination for older adults and their families. Be sure to stop in to learn more Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., located inside Lakeview Senior Center. For more information see Page 31. I hope you have a fulfilling new year while enjoying the exciting programs highlighted throughout this issue. For more information, visit one of our three senior centers or go to irvineseniors.org .

Be a Part of Something Bigger

Volunteering is an excellent way to give back! Volunteers offer crucial support to help ensure organizations can operate and provide high- level services to the community. Irvine Senior Services relies on dedicated volunteers to offer programs and services, including teaching classes, delivering and preparing meals, providing transportation to medical appointments, assisting with community events, and more. We know volunteering provides crucial support for the community, but did you know it can also help you? Volunteering can be incredibly fulfilling; it also provides a great deal of health benefits. Below are five reasons why volunteering is good for you. 1. Reduces social isolation. Volunteering increases social interaction and is a great way to meet new people with common interests. 2. Provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Volunteering can help older adults feel recharged and can be a motivating factor for setting and achieving goals. 3. Promotes physical activity. Staying active can help prevent health concerns common among older adults such as muscle weakness, joint problems, and nervous system difficulties. 4. Promotes mental activity. Volunteering keeps the brain active, which contributes to a person’s cognitive health. 5. Reduces stress levels. Volunteering reduces stress because the brain produces dopamine as a reward. It will help you feel appreciated and have a sense of purpose, which can also help reduce stress over time.

Are you ready to improve your health and feel like you are part of something bigger? Irvine Senior Services offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities geared to fit you. Whether you are interested in teaching a class, serving a meal, or offering companionship to a homebound older adult, we can help you find the perfect position. Even just one hour per week can make a difference in the community — and for you! For more information, contact volunteer@cityofirvine.org or 949-724-6923.
