JULY 2025

Throughout the summer, many high school and college students take another step toward adulthood and self-sufficiency when they start working their first job. It’s an exciting time in their lives, as they’ll learn many lessons about responsibility, patience, and more while gaining some great life experiences. They may even discover a new passion along the way that leads to a fulfilling career. Like many other young women, my very first job was babysitting. When my family moved to Alpharetta, my mom was one of the only pediatricians in the area, so I babysat many of her patients. It was kind of the perfect gig for me at the time. Who doesn’t want the pediatrician’s daughter to be their babysitter? Parents get a direct line to the doctor if anything happens. However, this job didn’t have much of an impact on my future. That didn’t come until I started working my first W-2 job. When I was in high school, I wanted nothing more than to join the debate team, something my parents didn’t think was worth the effort. They were worried it would become a distraction and take my focus away from my schoolwork. This was a very unique situation, as my parents had always been overly supportive of me and anything I wanted to do. I didn’t understand; I thought any parent would dream of their kid joining the debate team because it’s academic and would look great on a resume. You would have thought I was asking to leave the country or do something dangerous. They told me that if I was serious about debating, I needed to get a job and pay for all the travel and other expenses myself.

experience could get. It was a family-owned business that I could tell, even back then, was a financial strain on the owners. While I learned a few lessons in my role, that job’s primary purpose was to fund my debate endeavors, which is exactly what it did. For those unfamiliar, many debate teams operate similarly to high school sports teams. We would travel throughout the country for tournaments, and I would even get some physical activity in by carrying the heavy boxes full of evidence. I’m sure it’s a much different setting today with the advances in technology and the internet, but I loved nearly every moment of the experience.

I decided to give it a shot and got a job working at a candy store in the mall. It was one of the only jobs a child with no prior work

What’s ironic about this story is that it has everything to do with the trajectory of my life. I started debating and immediately realized I was really good at it. You win awards as a team and as individuals, and I walked away with almost all the awards after my very first tournament. This amplified my passion and carried into my college career, encouraging me to pursue law school and a future as a litigator. That one “no” from my parents directly led to my career.

THAT ONE ‘NO’ FROM MY PARENTS DIRECTLY LED TO MY CAREER.”

If your child comes to you this summer and asks to apply for a job, encourage them. You never know where it will lead!

BIG PROMISES LEAD TO BIG QUESTIONS. As you might expect, Manus AI and DeskSense aren’t the only AI assistants available. Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI are just a few major companies that have created other AI agents capable of handling similar tasks. As these tools become more common, they raise concerns about privacy and security. Another concern is the erosion of human skills and job displacement due to an overreliance on AI.

A few decades ago, TV shows and science fiction stories portrayed our time as a future with flying cars and robot assistants. But here we are in 2025, cars still don’t fly, coffee doesn’t pour itself, and most of us are stuck handling our household chores. We may not be in the world of “The Jetsons” yet, but technological developments like artificial intelligence (AI) remind us that the future is undoubtedly here. MEET YOUR DIGITAL TASKMASTERS. AI personal assistants are one recent development with huge potential to help with everyday life. Tools like Manus AI and DeskSense can simplify various tasks. Need help scanning a dense article, writing an email, or generating formulas for a spreadsheet? These tools have you covered. Manus AI is a supercharged browser assistant that can process data. The tool understands text, images, and code and can be integrated to work alongside web browsers and information management systems. Manus

These concerns underscore the importance of cautious development, but we cannot deny AI’s potential to save time and make our work and personal lives easier. And while AI might not do the dishes, it may help us regain some time to enjoy more of life beyond the screen.

In recent years, the idea of conservatorships has become more well known among the general public. News stories about Britney Spears and Michael Oher have brought more awareness to this concept while providing ample confusion to those unfamiliar with it. These stories shine a bad light on conservatorships, as we only see how other people can put themselves in a position of power over others and gain control over their fame, money, and future. However, most conservatorships in our country do not go down this dark path. Instead, they help everyone involved. A conservatorship is a process the court uses to give someone the legal authority to make decisions on behalf of another regarding their finances, personal care, or estate management. Conservatorships are usually between two adults and require specific circumstances to implement one. If you think your mom is simply getting older and making some poor decisions with her money, you might not be able to become her conservator

cerebral palsy. In most cases, these individuals can still manage some aspects of their lives independently and won’t need as much supervision as someone in a general conservatorship. GENERAL CONSERVATORSHIP General conservatorships come into play when someone is unable to manage their finances or health due to a mental impairment caused by an illness or injury. This could be someone who experienced a coma, had a stroke and has difficulty expressing their thoughts and wishes, or has a neurological disease like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. By becoming the conservator for a loved one, you agree to take on essential duties to make their life easier, such as making decisions about their education or health care, accessing their confidential records, and changing their legal rights when needed. Taking on the role of a conservator is a big responsibility. Call our office today if you have any questions or want to explore this concept further.

unless there is documented medical proof that she has diminished mental capacity.

Most conservatorships will fall into two categories: limited and general.

LIMITED CONSERVATORSHIP This type of conservatorship is often used for individuals who have had a developmental disability since they were a minor. It could be beneficial for those with autism, epilepsy, or

THE PARKS YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF (BUT NEED TO VISIT)

3 N ational P arks T hat A re W orth the D etour DITCH THE TOURIST TRAPS

Whenever you hear a friend or family member say they’re going to take a road trip to visit some of America’s most beautiful national parks, they usually plan to visit the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains, or Yosemite. These national parks consistently attract millions of visitors every year, but they’re far from the only must-see national parks in the country. There are 429 protected national sites within the U.S., and 63 of those have obtained the official “national park” designation in their names. (The other labels are battlefields, historic sites, monuments, recreation areas, etc.)

If you want to experience the beauty of America without the crowds, consider visiting these destinations during your next vacation! CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK, CALIFORNIA Often referred to as the Galapagos of North America, the Channel Islands are a unique area of the coast of Southern California. While visiting, you can expect to see seals, island foxes, and over 2,000 other plant and animal species, with 145 found nowhere else on Earth . You can reach the mainland visitor center in Ventura by car, but the islands are only accessible by park concessionaire boats or private boats. Make reservations in advance. CUYAHOGA NATIONAL PARK, OHIO If you want a unique experience, visit Cuyahoga National Park. Like many other

national parks, you can enjoy hiking, rock climbing, and photography while exploring the park’s 33,000 acres. You can admire many of the 1,000 species of plants and animals throughout your exploration, but if you want to get the full experience, hop aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, SOUTH DAKOTA Exploring a cave might not be your

first thought when considering national parks, but Wind Cave is a one-of-a-kind experience. It’s one of the longest and most complex caves in the world and has many unique features, such as frostwork, cave popcorn, and boxwork, creating unique sights with every step. Once you head back outside, a beautiful mixed-grass prairie, home to bison, prairie dogs, and more, will greet you.
