In recent years, the idea of conservatorships has become more well known among the general public. News stories about Britney Spears and Michael Oher have brought more awareness to this concept while providing ample confusion to those unfamiliar with it. These stories shine a bad light on conservatorships, as we only see how other people can put themselves in a position of power over others and gain control over their fame, money, and future. However, most conservatorships in our country do not go down this dark path. Instead, they help everyone involved. A conservatorship is a process the court uses to give someone the legal authority to make decisions on behalf of another regarding their finances, personal care, or estate management. Conservatorships are usually between two adults and require specific circumstances to implement one. If you think your mom is simply getting older and making some poor decisions with her money, you might not be able to become her conservator

GENERAL CONSERVATORSHIP General conservatorships come into play when someone is unable to manage their finances or health due to a mental impairment caused by an illness or injury. This could be someone who experienced a coma, had a stroke and has difficulty expressing their thoughts and wishes, or has a neurological disease like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. By becoming the conservator for a loved one, you agree to take on essential duties to make their life easier, such as making decisions about their education or health care, accessing their confidential records, and changing their legal rights when needed.
