Mental and Physical Balance. Stayingactiveandstayingbalanced inmany ways go hand in hand. Staying active refers to the amount of activity that youengage indaily.Thisofcoursecan refer tohowmuch timeyouspendat thegym, but itcanalso refer tohowmanystepsyou take inaday, howoften you find yourself running around the office, and how frequently you head out to the backyard to run around with your children or your dog. Balance in many ways works on the same principles. There are some activities that you do every day because you have to do them — work often falls into this category, as do household chores. But what about the activities that you simply love to do? What about the activities that you enjoy? Think about the last time that you sat down with a book that you loved and made yourself a cup of tea or coffee and really enjoyed the moment. Perhaps it isn’t reading that you wish you had more time for, but instead it is a garden that has grown weeds as it has been neglected. It could be a project at your home that you have looked forward to completing or an old car that you’ve wanted to fix up. There are special hobbies and interests that appeal to each of us, and spending time with those hobbies can help you live a more balanced life. Alongsidewith the taskofbecomingmorementallybalancedwith the things that you spend time with in your life is the challenge of becoming more physicallybalanced.Therearecertainmarkers that typically indicate trouble with maintaining balance, such as frequently tripping and falling or feeling dizzy when standing too long. But even if you are not having fundamental

issues with your ability to stay balanced in this way, you may still have difficulty with whole-body balance. Yoga is a great form of exercise to use to improveyourability tobalance, asyogahelps tostrengthencoremuscles and improve coordination. You can improve your physical balance by: • Increasing muscle strength • Improving stamina • Improving core strength • Practicing balancing techniques In addition, taking steps to ensure that you are getting a full night of rest, that you are exercising regularly, and that you are eating a healthy diet are all strong components to ensuring you are well-balanced. Thinkabout thepercentageof time thatyouspendworkingduring theweek. For most people this number is well over 40 hours per week! Then consider howmuch time isspentdrivingtoandfromworkandaroundtownonerrands, and then consider the time spent doing things you have to do at home, like the dishes or the laundry. Then really think about how much time you are spendingdoingthethingsthatmakeyoufeelbetter— includingthosehobbies that you love, but also being active and engaging with the people you care about. There are plenty of ways to incorporate light activity into your lifestyle, such as: • Taking a walk in the evening with your family • Wearing a pedometer and trying to take more steps every day • Joining your local community center and using the pool to swim laps several times a week • Engaging in light weight training at home before work • Taking a yoga class These are just several examples of how you could incorporate more activity into your lifestyle without making many large changes to your way of life. If you feel that your physical health or an old injury is holding you back from being active, contact us. What our recent graduates had to say...

I cannot say enough good things! “Four months ago, I broke my ankle in Seattle. The journey back home to Naperville was torture. My anklehurt constantly. Fortunately, I needed no surgery, but needed physical therapy during the healing process all summer. I was referred to Activa and I cannot say enough good things about the therapists, interns, receptionist, but especially about Dr Samir Sharma. I have had physical therapy at a large center in downtown Chicago and although it was adequate, Dr Sharma was outstanding. During each session, he took time out for every patient and addressed her or his needs. There is no doubt, I will continue to refer Dr Samir Sharma to my family and friends who need physical therapy, to Activa.” – Anne F. Very helpful in my recovery! “Before coming to Activa I was in pain everyday. My ankles and feet were in pain and I was unable to stand and work for any longer than a few hours a day. The team at Activa was very helpful in my recovery. I am now feeling 100% thanks to Activa!” – Deborah B. I have no pain and my strength is much improved! “I had a total hip replacement on my left side. Initially, I came to Activa for a pre-operative PT evaluation. At my initial visit, I was impressed by the warm and welcoming atmosphere. I was evaluated by Samir and immediately was impressed byhisprofessionalismandcompassionatemanner. When Ifirststartedpre-surgery therapy Ihadseverepainmy lefthipwith inability towalkupanddownstairs, aswell as difficulty with sitting and standing from a chair. My strength in both legs were diminished. After surgery, I had an additional 10 weeks of therapy with Samir and his team. My progress was monitored closely during my therapy. Presently, I have no pain and my strength is much improved. I can’t thank them enough.” – Don K. Very helpful in my recovery! “I was referred to a physical therapist for vestibular rehabilitation therapy to treat my persistent (and recurring) benign positional vertigo (BPPV). This treatment is

specialized and the search to find one in my community was frustrating. I found Activa through an internet search and I was very impressed by their raving online reviews. Idecided to try themoutand Iamso thankful that Idid.Samirdidawonderful job with my therapy. So wonderful in fact, that I was feeling back to “normal” in way fewer sessions than originally predicted. I am appreciative of everything that Samir and his staff did to help get me back on my (newly-stable) feet!” – Megan B.
