JULY 2025

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA A TURNING POINT FOR PUBLIC MEDIA

This year has been especially difficult for TPT and public media, with growing threats to federal funding casting uncertainty over our future. In just the last few weeks, the Trump administration signed an executive order to eliminate all federal funding for PBS and NPR, terminated the U.S. Department of Education’s Ready to Learn grant that supported TPT’s PBS KIDS series “Skillsville,” and submitted a formal request to Congress to rescind funding already approved for the next two years, which the House passed on June 12th. As I write this, we await the Senate’s vote on the rescissions package: If they vote “yes,” the landscape of public media will be irreparably changed. This isn’t just a policy debate in Washington—it’s an existential threat to the future of trusted, local public media available without charge. Federal support makes up nearly 10% of TPT’s budget, and for every dollar of federal funding we receive, we unlock six more from local viewers, foundations and partners. That funding powers educational content for parents and caregivers, supports TPT NOW, our multilingual emergency alert service, and helps us bring local stories to life, like the upcoming sixth season of “Relish,” recently nominated for a James Beard Media Award. As we mark the signing of the Declaration of Independence, TPT presents “A Capitol Fourth 2025” on July 4 at 8 pm and 9:30 pm. Also in July, “Renaissance: The Blood and the Beauty” explores a time of upheaval and extraordinary creativity, while “The Great American Recipe” returns for Season 4 with an all-star culinary team. These programs made possible by public media are now at risk of disappearing. At a time when our communities are more divided and more in need of connection than ever before, the work of TPT is essential. That’s why I’m asking for your continued support— not just as a viewer or member, but as an advocate. If you believe in what TPT stands for, now is the time to raise your voice. Reach out to your elected senators in Washington. Tell them why public media matters to you and your community. And visit TPT.org/Advocate to learn more about how you can take action.

2024 IN REVIEW: STORYTELLING THAT INSPIRES ARTS & CULTURAL PROGRAMMING FROM THE TWIN CITIES PBS 2024 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

ARTS & CULTURE PROGRAMMING With a long history as a vibrant arts & culture storyteller, TPT premiered a body of work that explores the creativity of artists living with disability, Minnesota’s rich tapestry of local bands and musicians, and the power of food to understand history and heritage, and to connect community. Art + Medicine: Disability, Culture and Creativity In October 2023, TPT aired its fourth installment with the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Center for the Art of Medicine entitled “Art + Medicine: Disability, Culture and Creativity.” Hosted by beloved storyteller Kevin Kling, Professor Jessica Horvath Williams, PhD and Doctor Tsegaensh Selameab, the film centers on artists and healthcare clinicians who use stories and performances to challenges our perceptions of disability.

Stage TPT’s third season of “Stage” premiered in October 2023 with six new episodes featuring marquee local musicians such as Dessa, Soul Asylum and Chastity Brown, who selected a band or artist they admire as an opening act. Blending propulsive live performances and storytelling from the iconic 7th St Entry stage, the show was filmed in front of a live audience of local music fans. In addition, TPT produced a YouTube series called “Backstage” that centers on conversations between the artists about their influences, how they got their start and why they admire one another.

National Award Winner “Stage” was the proud recipient of the 2024 Gracie Award in the “TV-Local” category from the Alliance for Women in Media.

Regional Award Winner Upper Midwest Emmy® Award Winner in the “Arts & Entertainment – Long Form Content” category

JULY 2025

We have many great musicians in Minnesota, but going to live events is not very accessible. I don’t like crowds, my mom is in a wheelchair. There are many reasons that attending a concert is not an option. So getting TPT to record live concerts is a great benefit to the community and allows a more diverse audience to enjoy our local music scene.

– TPT VIEWER, 2024 LEGACY SURVEY

Relish Premiering exclusively on the PBS App in May, our fifth season of “Relish,” hosted by Chef Yia Vang, offered a new and expanded version of the series featuring six 30-minute episodes. Chef Vang visited and cooked with 12 chefs and/or food entrepreneurs, including Sean Sherman (founder of the Sioux Chef and Owamni), Milissa Silva (El Burrito Mercado), Aubry and Kale Walch (Herbivorous Butcher), and Orest and Nick Kramarczuk (Kramarczek’s). Certain to make audiences crave a global culinary adventure right in their backyard, the series later premiered on broadcast and on YouTube in fall 2024.

TPT sparks connection and engagement After watching local arts, culture and history shows on TPT, viewers reported the following statements: • 73% Feel more connected to Minnesota. • 73% Feel more informed about what is going on in their community. • 68% Learned about new artists in their community.

Tunnel of Fudge Bundt Cake Courtesy of Nordic Ware Recipe Archives

Glaze: 3/4 cup confectioner’s sugar 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 2 tablespoons milk

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Prepare a 10-12 cup Bundt pan with baking spray and use a pastry brush to evenly coat the pan. You can also prep with shortening/softened butter and dust with cocoa powder. Set aside. Cake: In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs 1 at a time, mixing well after each addition. Gradually add confectioner’s sugar, mixing well. Stir in flour, cocoa, and chopped walnuts by hand, until well blended. Spoon batter into prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 60-64 minutes (Since the cake has a soft tunnel of fudge, ordinary doneness test cannot be used. Accurate oven temperature and baking time are crucial). Cool in pan 60 minutes on a wire rack. Invert cake onto a cake plate and cool completely. Glaze: In a small bowl, combine confectioner’s sugar, cocoa and milk, mixing until smooth. Thin with more milk, if needed. Spoon over top of the cake. Allow glaze to run over the sides of cake. *You can substitute chopped pecans, hazelnuts or other favorite nuts instead of walnuts, but the recipe does require finely chopped nuts to result in the proper consistency and density.

PREP : 15 MINUTES COOK : 1 HOUR SERVINGS : 10 - 12

The Bundt Pan increased in popularity in 1966, thanks to a Pillsbury Bake-Off second-place recipe winner for a Tunnel of Fudge Cake made in a Nordic Ware Bundt Pan. This adaptation from the original recipe (due to ingredient availability) is just as tasty as the original and bakes beautifully in a 10-12 cup Bundt Pan. This legendary cake is all about that rich, gooey fudge tunnel that’s the heart of every slice created by the iconic shape of the Bundt pan. To discover the sweet story behind the legendary Tunnel of Fudge Bundt cake, join Nordic Ware’s Jenny Dalquist — granddaughter of the company’s founders — in the new season of “Relish,” now streaming on the PBS App!

INGREDIENTS Cake: 1 3/4 cups unsalted butter, softened 1 3/4 cups sugar 6 large eggs

"Relish" is made possible by Minnesota's Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

2 cups confectioner’s sugar 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 2 cups walnuts, chopped*

Can’t Take the Heat? It May Be Your Medications By Stephenie Overman

Because older adults often take more medications – especially for chronic conditions — than do their younger counterparts, it makes it likely that they've been prescribed something that may interfere with the body's heat regulation. There may be alternatives, such as temporarily taking lower doses or switching to different medicines, Blackburn says. "All those things are on the table. There are lots of ways adjustments can be made for a defined period of time during hotter weather. But it's important that people not discontinue medications on their own." In conversation with a health care provider or pharmacist, "do a thorough medication review – look at the risk and benefits in context and proceed from there," Blackburn says. She adds that it's always important to store medications appropriately. There are steps you can take on your own to reduce your risk, Blackburn continues. "For instance, monitor your heart rate. If you have diabetes, maybe monitor yourself more closely." If you're taking diuretics to get rid of excess fluid and salt, check your weight every day, drink plenty of water and be aware of the early signs of dehydration. Drinking water is crucial. Reduce consumption of alcohol and caffeine. Wear loose cotton clothing. Wear a hat. Go outside early in the day. "If you don't have air conditioning, know where cooling centers are," Blackburn says, suggesting a mall or public library.

Drugs frequently prescribed to older adults can dangerously interfere with the brain's ability to regulate heat. These drugs can disrupt the hypothalamus, an area of the brain that controls body temperature, hunger and thirst — and often is referred to as "the thermostat of the body." Commonly prescribed medications that increase risk from heat include diuretics, anticholinergic agents and psychotropic medications, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They pose threats that can lead to dehydration, increased sensitivity of the skin, electrolyte imbalance and heatstroke. As bodies change through the aging process, older people tend to become more sensitive to heat, says Hayley Blackburn, University of Montana associate professor.

We Travel Everywhere – With Our Dogs By Courtenay Rudzinski

Choose dog-friendly destinations. One key to stress-free pet travel is picking destinations with good weather and plenty to do outside. Beaches, parks and lakes are all solid choices. Pack a dog travel bag. We have our luggage, and they have theirs — a nylon string backpack that rides in the backseat with them. It holds essentials: leashes, a Nalgene water bottle, collapsible bowl and a comfort toy. Incorporate them into the trip. Our days usually begin with a slow walk — my senior dog, Daisy, moves at glacial speed — giving them time to sniff out new smells and get a feel for their surroundings. I read once that letting a dog stop to sniff is the same as how we feel scrolling Instagram, so I try to indulge them a bit before we move along. Book pet-friendly accommodations. Although we've stayed in hotels that allow dogs, we prefer pet-inclusive Airbnbs. They're less sterile and more comfortable, and we don't have to worry about elevator noise, barking neighbors or crowded hallways. When booking, I always use the "allows pets" filter and look for features that make travel easier: small, enclosed yards, full kitchens (because rinsing a dirty dog bowl in a bathroom sink isn't ideal), and hard floors instead of carpet.

Once my husband and I became empty nesters, we couldn't wait to travel alone. Not only would we save money, but my days of coaxing angsty teens into pleasant family dinners were over. Our new hurdle? We had no one to watch our dogs. Both pups were older rescues and had never been left at a kennel. And besides, my husband now worked from home and was used to having them around. He proposed we bring them along — we wouldn't be alone, as 55% of dog owners and 36% of cat owners tailor their travel plans to accommodate their pets, according to The American Pet Products Association (APPA). I wasn't so sure at first, but now they go everywhere with us. Here's how we make it work.
