RIDE INTO SUMMER
Always protect your head. This might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people skip the helmet. For cyclists, a properly fitting helmet is the best way to prevent head injuries. DOT-approved helmets are essential for motorcyclists, and full-face helmets offer the most protection. Wear protective clothing. Motorcyclists and bicyclists should gear up, even in the heat. Lightweight, breathable armored jackets, and pants are available and designed for summer riding. Gloves, boots, and eye protection are also must-haves. For cyclists, gloves help with grip and protect your hands. Don’t forget to hydrate. Riding in the summer heat can dehydrate you quickly. Bring water, take breaks in the shade, and watch out for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, headache, or confusion. If you start feeling off, stop and cool down.
Know your route and stay alert. Familiarize yourself with your route, check the weather, and avoid roads under construction or heavily trafficked if possible. Always look for road hazards — gravel, potholes, oil slicks, or even debris can cause a wipeout. Don’t forget your maintenance. Before you head out, give your ride a quick check. For cyclists, that means tire pressure, brakes, and chain. For motorcyclists, it means checking your oil, tires, lights, and controls.
Tips to Stay Safe on 2 Wheels
Nothing beats a ride in the summer. Whether you’re cruising on a motorcycle or pedaling your favorite bike trail, warm weather and long days make the summer months the perfect time to get out and enjoy the open road (or path). But with extra sunshine and traffic comes an increased need to stay alert and safe. For cyclists and motorcyclists alike: Be visible! One of the biggest risks riders face is not being seen. It’s important to always assume drivers might not spot you. Wear bright, reflective clothing and keep your lights on — even during the day. A flashing rear light on a bicycle or a headlight on a motorcycle can make a world of difference.
Summer is a great time to ride — but only if you do it smart. Stay safe, stay seen, and enjoy the journey.
