NEWSLETTER THE MOST POPULAR NEWYEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

1. Get in shape. The most common New Year’s resolutions have to do with getting in shape. If you’re resolving to hit the gym to improve your health or just your physique, you can avoid falling off the fitness cliff come February by enlisting a friend to exercise with you, or joining a regular class where you’ll be missed if you skip a session or two. Need additional motivation? Use fitness technology to stay on track. “Fitbits will tell you when you’ve been sitting too long and you need to move. 2. Lose weight. Spend any amount of time on Instagram and you won’t be able to avoid the avalanche of products and schemes promising quick weight loss. And while the thought of shrinking a dress size or five by Christmas morning is a gift in itself, there really aren’t any

shortcuts when it comes to dropping pounds. While we’ve long heard the message that the key to weight loss lies in diet and exercise, the latest research suggests that, while exercise is important for overall health and keeping weight off, it isn’t actually that useful for weight loss. The bottom line: If you want to lose weight, focus on cutting calories. 3. Spend less, save more. If your bank account is looking a little low after the holiday gifts have all been purchased, you may be one of the many people who resolve to get their financial house in order in 2018. Buy and sell clothes at consignment stores, consider refurbished electronics, and buy produce when it’s on sale. Sources: https://www.rd.com/health/diet-weight-loss/popular- new-years-resolutions/

Headandneckpain isnot the typeofpain thatyoucan push throughanddealwith for too long.Forone thing, chronic pain in the head or neck is often associated with some sort of chronic health concern — one that you need to deal with, not ignore. Secondly, when you are dealing with constant pain in your head or neck, it becomes difficult to concentrate. This can have a negative effect on your personal relationships, your career and more. The most common cause of neck or head pain is a muscleor jointproblem.Workingwithaphysiotherapist can help you to identify the cause of the trouble and begin taking steps to correct the issue, allowing you to find relief from the pain without having to commit to long-termpainmanagement—whichoften includes theuseofpainmedicationsthatarepotentiallyharmful to your health and not likely to work as well over time. Unlike pain medications that become less helpful the longer they are used, physiotherapy provides long- term relief from pain by correcting the joint or muscle concernwithtargetedtherapies likeflexibilityexercises, musclestrengtheningtechniques, andguidedstretches that target core joints and muscles. Of course, not all neck or head pain is the same, so understanding the basics of what you are dealing with is the first step to achieving relief.

Head Pain 101. There are a lot of different types of headaches that you may experience, and each can be caused by its own different reason. For example, migraines can be caused by environmental factors, food allergies or even as a result of stress. There are headaches that can develop due to sinus pain and headaches thatwilldevelopwhenyouaredehydrated. There are also headaches that will develop when you are exposed too long to loud noises. There is no singular fix for each of these different types of headaches, which is why attempting to treat every headache you experience with the same medication frequently doesn’t work. One of the most common causes of headaches that are easily treatable with physiotherapy is radiating headaches, whicharecausedbystress inthe jointsand musclesof theneck.Thiscausespain to radiate from thetopoftheneck intothehead, especiallysurrounding the ears. There are a lot of reasons why radiating headachescoulddevelop, includingasa resultof lack of movement and stiffness in the neck. NECK PAIN 101

In many situations, pain that develops in the neck can be associated with one of two major problems. The first is upper-back pain that begins to radiate into the neck. The second is arthritis. Physiotherapy can be used to address both types of neck pain. Cervical arthritis causes frequent aches in the neck and shoulders. This pain is generally worse when there are sudden changes in weather or at the end of the day, and while over-the-counter medication may make the pain less severe, it won’t eliminate the pain entirely. The biggest problem posed by cervical arthritis is that the pain will typically cause a loss of range of motion in the neck, which actually increases your risk of injury as a result of a sudden movement and causes regular discomfort and frustration as you are not able to utilize your neck in the way you normally could. There are plenty of situations in which pain in the neck as a result of cervical arthritis grows so severe that it can cause chronic poor posture and even a reduction in height. Addressing the Core Problem The majority of neck and head pain can be helped with one simple strategy: strength building. It frequently happens that the absolute cause of the start of a pain in the neck or head is a result of poor posture or quickened motion, and building core strength, as well as strength in the neck, can make a huge difference in your ability to handle tasks without experiencing chronic pain. Keep in mind that the neck and head are sensitive areas, so attempting to treat the pain at home can be dangerous and may not be effective. Working with a physiotherapist is the safe way to ensure that you are practicing positive techniques to find relief from your aches and pains.

Experience The Benefits Of Stretching

As you age, your muscle tissue actually dries out a little, tightening. This causes a loss of range of motion in your joints and tissues. In addition to the loss of range of motion, it can really limit your active lifestyles and hinder day-to- day, normal motions.Tasks that used to be simple, such as dressing or squatting down to tie your shoes, now become extremely difficult. A regular stretching program helps lengthen your muscles and makes daily living activities much easier. Everyone can learn to stretch, regardless of age or flexibility. Stretching should be a part of your daily routine, whether you exercise or not. It does not have to involve a huge amount of time, but stretching can end up giving you huge results! Stretching is a natural part of what we do on a daily basis. You might notice that if you have been sitting in a particular position for a long time, you stretch unconsciously. It feels good! In addition to that good feeling, a consistent stretching program will produce large gains in flexibility and joint movement. Be kind to your muscles and they will be kind to you!

5 SIMPLE HEALTHY EATING RESOLUTIONS

Resolution 1. Eat More Omega-3s Solution: Seek out seafood.

slim down. But the average person eats about 14 grams of day—the recommended daily intake is 21 to 38 grams. One of the easiest ways to up your fiber intake is to eat more whole grains. Quinoa, whole-wheat couscous, bulgur and polenta are all quick-cooking options to add to your weeknight repertoire.

Getting more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids might just help you keep your blood pressure down. Research suggests that omega-3s can help improve your mood, which we all need a little help with in the short, dark days of winter. Aim to get two servings of fish a week, particularly fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines and some types of tuna, whicharerich inomega-3s.Notafish lover?Optforwalnutsandflax, which are good non fish sources of omega-3s. The majority of people don’t eat the daily recommended 3 or more servings of vegetables, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Roasting vegetables caramelizes their natural sugars so they taste fantastic. It’s an easy way to cook veggies for dinner—pop a pan of them in the oven and make the rest of dinner while they roast. Resolution 2. Pile On The Veggies Solution: Get out the roasting pan.

Resolution 4. Eat Less Meat Solution: Learn to like tofu more.

A popular reason to cut back on meat is for environmental reasons, but you’ll be helping your heart too. When you replace meat with soy, you’ll naturally eat less saturated fat. While tofu might not have a real “flavor,” that’s what makes it so versatile—it soaks up the flavors of a stir-fry sauce or marinade like a sponge, making it taste terrific! Resolution 5. Rein in Your Sugar Addiction Solution: Make low-sugar treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. We eat too much sugar. We consume 355 calories—or 22 teaspoons—of added sugars a day. Luckily, you can still make treats that satisfy your sweet tooth and cut back on your sugar intake at the same time by choosing treats that are naturally sweet like fruit.

Resolution 3. Up Your Fiber Intake Solution: Experiment with whole grains.
