WELCOME, BABY MILA! How to Have a Happy Baby

Hello, everyone!

“While we weren’t ready for her to show up just yet, we’re all so happy to welcome Mila into the world.”

Dr. Janice here with some exciting news. A few weeks ago, one of our dental hygienists, Berenice Morales, gave birth to her first child, a beautiful baby girl named Mila.

Baby Mila was born on Aug. 4, 2018, at 12:18 a.m., weighing 4 pounds and 8 ounces. Her arrival was a bit of a surprise, because we didn’t expect her until early September. It was a little scary, but fortunately, both baby and mom were okay. Mila opened her eyes and was fully aware early on, though she had to stay at the hospital for a few weeks afterward, just to be safe. Berenice has since been able to take her home, and they are both doing well. While we weren’t ready for her to show up just yet, we’re all so happy to welcome Mila into the world. She’s so cute! Everyone at the office is ready to provide Berenice and Mila with all the love and support they need as Berenice takes some time to get to know her daughter and get her bearings as a mom. This period of time can be nerve-wracking for new parents. Before my son, Jake, was born, I didn’t know what to expect. I was so excited to be a mom, but at first, I thought I was just going to wing it. This didn’t make me feel very confident, so I’m glad I found some courses to help me prepare. As a mom, the No. 1 piece of advice I can give to any new parent is don’t be shy about signing up for parenting courses. New parents can be really hard on themselves, especially new moms. We assume that after the baby comes, some maternal instinct will kick in and we’ll naturally know how to do everything. It can be frustrating as a new mom to realize you don’t know how to nurse your baby or get them to stop crying. But it’s okay! You shouldn’t be hard on yourself or think you’re a bad parent for not having all the answers right away. You’ll learn. I also have some advice for new parents as a dentist. First, before the baby arrives, it’s important to remember how much of baby’s health is connected to Mom’s. While you’re pregnant, even your oral health can impact your baby, so be sure to keep up with your dentist appointments during your pregnancy.

Speaking of oral health, not many people know that parents need to clean their baby’s mouth even before their teeth start to come in. After they nurse or drink milk from the bottle, gently clean around your baby’s gums and tongue with a soft wipe. This helps keep the mouth healthy and makes it easy for the baby teeth to come in. Being a parent is scary. Jake is 4 years old, and I am still learning what it means to be a mom. But I know that the most important thing is to do your best and show your child how much you love them every day. And don’t be scared to ask questions. If any parents out there ever need advice, I welcome you to ask me — talk to me while you’re at the office or send me an email. I’m happy to help however I can.

Once again, I want to congratulate Berenice on becoming a mom and welcome Mila into our A+ family. We’re so lucky to have you both!

Best in Show or Halloween Hazard?

goes when you’re buying fabric for homemade costumes. And remember, fire-resistant is not the same as fireproof . While fire-resistant material takes longer to burn and can be put out quickly, it can still catch fire and cause serious injuries.

Remind your child to use caution around open flames and avoid costumes with flimsy, hanging components, like flowing sleeves, long skirts, and capes.

Test makeup first.

Halloween is a great time to have fun with face paint, and makeup is a good alternative to masks, which can obscure a child’s vision. However, a lot of costume makeup isn’t approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Before letting your child cover their face in makeup from the Halloween store, test their skin for allergic reactions by putting just a little bit on the back of their hand first.

Costume Safety Tips for Kids

Practice prop safety.

For many kids, picking out a costume is the best part of Halloween. Will they be a spooky witch, a wildcat, or their favorite superhero? There are so many options! But in all the fun, it can be easy for parents to overlook certain risks that Halloween costumes can pose. Here are important safety tips to remember when choosing the best Halloween costume.

What’s a Jedi Knight without her lightsaber or a wizard without his magic wand? The right accessories can really bring a costume together, but it’s important that props — especially weapon props, like swords, knives, or guns — are not mistaken for the real thing. Choose props that are obviously fake, with round edges made from soft, flexible material. And if your child wants to wear their Halloween costume to school or some other event, check the rules on props beforehand to avoid any trouble.

Look for fire-resistant costumes.

Candles inside jack-o’-lanterns and other open flames are everywhere on Halloween night, so make sure your child’s costume isn’t a fire hazard. Most store-bought costumes are made from fire-resistant materials, but you should still check the labels on all costumes, wigs, and accessories. The same

Halloween is a night for ghosts and goblins to come out to play, and with these tips, your kids can safely dress up and join in the fun.

TRICK OR TREAT? Protect Your Child’s Teeth This Halloween

Every year, as we approach Halloween, parents will come into the office and ask, “Is it okay if my child eats all that Halloween candy?” While chowing down on candy shouldn’t be a regular activity, Halloween is supposed to be fun! We say yes, it is okay for kids (and parents) to eat candy on Halloween! However, when kids bring home their big bags of candy after trick-or-treating, that night of fun can turn into big dental problems down the road if you’re not careful.

If your child wants to enjoy a piece of candy, have them wait until during or after mealtimes. Eating food increases saliva production, washing away food particles and counteracting the acid produced by bacteria. Saving candy for meals means that sugar is less likely to cling to your teeth for hours. Consider donating to Operation Gratitude. If you want to get that sugar out of your house on Nov. 1 but don’t want to be wasteful by throwing out perfectly good candy, you can donate extra Halloween candy to Operation Gratitude. This organization creates care packages for active duty military members, veterans, and first responders. Halloween candy is always a welcome

addition to these packages! Learn how to give at operationgratitude.com/express-your- thanks/halloween-candy .

Don’t forget to brush!

Kids need to brush and floss every day, but it’s extra important to check that your little ghosts and goblins clean their teeth after indulging in all that Halloween candy. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a sweet treat every now and then, and on Halloween, we’re expected to have a little fun. Just make sure to have a plan for all that candy. The scariest thing on Halloween shouldn’t be cavities.

Don’t let candy be a snack.

Halloween candy tends to stick around, and it can be tempting to reach for those fun-size treats throughout the day. Not only is this bad for your waistline, snacking on sugar all day will also do a number on your teeth.

Open enrollment for next year’s health and dental insurance is right around the corner, and we often see that benefit managers or employees at smaller companies are often confused about what plan to choose to benefit them the most. We find that some of our patients pick a plan in which the monthly payments are lower, but then they are stuck with an insurance coverage that is not right for their dental needs, or they end up having very high copayments every time they come in the office.
