Pulling up their socks for charity

There are quite a few sock drawers around the Clarence-Rockland area which are a bit emptier now, thanks to four eager and energetic students at Rockland Kindergar- ten Public School. Nathan Stordy, Ben Loov, Liam Calvert, and Marshall Charette have 534 pairs of socks between them. A few of the socks are their own but almost all of the others are

fromclassmates and other students at their school, families of those students, staff at the school, and a few strangers who got caught up in a whirlwind project the four of them have pursued since the start of February to help make life a little bit more comfortable for the homeless. Pull Out Your Socks is the name of the project and the battle cry for the quartet. They have been collecting new and almost- new pairs of socks with the plan to turn over the collection to a charitable group for dis- tribution to the homeless. The success of their collection campaign has astonished even them. “I’d thought that maybe by the end, we’d have 200 (pairs),” said Loov.
The four students evenwent out and chal- lenged their older counterparts at neigh- bouring Rockland District High School to meet or beat their efforts. That challenge was issued a couple weeks ago when Calvert, Charette, Loov and Stordy were just getting started on their collection project. Before the end of their first week, they were already 300 pairs of socks to the good. Which gives the high school student population a real challenge of their own now. Not resting content, the four will still accept more contributions to add to their already humongous sock pile, even as they start contacting potential charity groups who will be able to look after distributing the growing mound of footwear.
