to talk about in this space. A big theme that ran throughout this section of the conversation revolved around changing others’ perspective of payroll. This could be as straightforward as explaining that payroll doesn’t just equal payslips and going beyond that, so what those payslips then mean for employees’ livelihoods – their ability to pay their mortgages, to put food on the table for their families and to do pretty much anything in their lives – payroll enables individuals to do all of that. When we frame payroll in this human- centric way, especially when engaging with employees, it prompts people to sit up and take notice. It reminds us that payroll isn’t just a back-office function, and that it’s essential to financial security and wellbeing. Sometimes, these conversations could feel a bit like gazing into the distant future – interesting and engaging, but not exactly urgent. But over the last year, things have really taken off. Changes we thought were years away suddenly feel right around the corner. From my own point of view, it’s been quite a shift. I was away on maternity leave for roughly eight months, and coming back felt a bit like returning to a whole new version of the payroll world I left. Thankfully, in the best possible way.
So much has moved forward so quickly, and it’s genuinely exciting to see where things are going next. With all that in mind, we brought together a group of experts from across the pay community to chat about how the so-called payroll of the ‘future’ is already becoming a reality today. The conversation was lively, insightful and full of energy. Everyone had a lot to say about where things are headed and what it means for the industry right now. Raising that payroll profile: it’s all about perspective With such passionate individuals joining the discussion, I knew there’d be plenty
