Advancing payroll education at master’s level
Will Blackshaw, Communications Manager, Loughborough Business School, discusses the MsC in Strategic Leadership and how it can empower and encourage payroll professionals to take on leadership roles
T he partnership between IPPE, a subsidiary of the CIPP, and Loughborough University at master’s level marks a significant advancement for professional education in the payroll sector. This innovative collaboration aims to bring workforce compensation and benefits management into strategic discussions, preparing professionals to take on leadership roles within their organisations. Recognised for the quality of education on offer, Loughborough Business School is one of a handful of UK business schools to enjoy triple accreditation from the Association of Masters of Business Administration, the European Foundation for Management Development Quality Improvement System and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The MSc in Strategic Leadership draws on the extensive experience of Loughborough Business School’s dedicated professional education team, offering learners the opportunity to develop the critical capabilities, interpersonal skills and theoretical understanding needed to excel in senior leadership roles. “I had been with my employer for 20 years, starting as a payroll assistant and working my way up through the department to group payroll manager. I was confident in my payroll knowledge but felt that I needed to improve my people management skills and my understanding of the business outside of the department to fulfil my potential in this role. “I discussed this with my manager and referred to the training and qualifications available through IPPE. It was agreed that the Senior Leader Programme at Loughborough seemed the best fit to allow me to develop within my position and in turn provide benefit to the business. “The opportunity to network with students working in different sectors and not just those working in payroll helped me gain a much greater understanding of the value my team can bring to the organisation. “In my current employment, the payroll department has, traditionally, been a standalone department and as such my understanding of the wider business was very limited. This programme gave me the opportunity to reach out to the wider business and gain a greater understanding of what goes on outside of the pay office door.”
