1 Corinthians, 2nd ed. David E. Garland BAKER EXEGETICAL COMMENTARY ON THE NEW TESTAMENT Robert W. Yarbrough and Joshua W. Jipp, series editors Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians is one of the most important epistles in the New Testament. In this substantive volume, David Garland offers one of the best evangelical commentaries available on 1 Corinthians. The new edition has been updated throughout to account for recent scholarship. Garland’s thoughtful commentary engages contemporary scholar- ship while providing a readable study that will be accessible to stu- dents, pastors, and scholars. After considering the context of the letter and the social and cultural setting of Corinth, Garland turns to his exegetical work. An introduction to each major unit of thought is followed by the author’s own translation of the Greek text. In the course of his commentary, Garland incorporates references to other ancient writings that help explain particular aspects of Paul’s meaning or provide information on the social and cultural context. As with all volumes in the award-winning BECNT series, this com- mentary features detailed interaction with the Greek text, exten- sive research, chapter-by-chapter exegesis, a blend of scholarly depth and readability, and an acclaimed, user-friendly design. “Garland is rightly known as a balanced and judicious commentator. I have found the first edition of his 1 Corinthians commentary to be one of the best available commentaries on that letter, and this up-to-date new edition affirms that verdict even more.” —Craig S. Keener, Asbury Seminary “Garland has been a trusted voice in New Testament studies for decades, and I have turned to his 1 Corinthians commentary too many times to count. With a fresh look at the biblical text and significant engagement with recent scholarship, Garland has made a great commentary even better with this second edition.” —Nijay K. Gupta, Northern Seminary “Simply put, Garland is one of the finest commentary writers of our generation. The only thing better than a Garland commentary is an updated and enhanced Garland commentary. This one on 1 Corin - thians will constitute a ‘go-to,’ gold standard on the book for years to come.” —George H. Guthrie, Regent College, Vancouver
