DELIVERING BALANCE IN HOLISTIC DENTISTRY TAKING A LOOK BEHIND US WITH EYES WIDE OPEN FOR THE FUTURE!

In August 2012, I took a giant leap of faith and purchased an existing practice. Since then, Wrigleyville Dental has grown tremendously. For many years, I was the sole dentist in the office, but we’ve now expanded to having two other general dentists and a pediatric orthodontist join the Wrigleyville Dental family. I am extremely grateful, proud, and humbled by how far we have come, and I’m excited about my dreams for the future of the practice. This month, we celebrate an amazing 10 years in business, delivering the best dental care to our valued patients! As many of you know, I took a two-month sabbatical from clinical dentistry to recharge, focus on growing Wrigleyville Dental, and soak up as much time as possible with my family before my oldest daughter, Sonya, heads off to kindergarten this fall. In my absence, you have all had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Anna Kolencherry, Dr. Shivani Patel, and Dr. Catherine Murphy. But I’ve been busy! During my sabbatical, I have taken a few continuing education courses to expand my knowledge and skills as well as bring more to the practice for our patients. I took a four-day intensive management course so I can better my leadership skills to benefit my team. In dental school, there is no business or management training, so as a business owner, we have to learn all of it on our own. I also took several courses about our new Fotona Laser. It has the capabilities of preparing cavity fillings without anesthetic, doing Smoothlase to minimize facial wrinkles, Nightlase to lift the soft palate and help those with sleep apnea, photobiomodulation and cut, clean, disinfect and stop bleeding tissue. This laser's capabilities are endless and fascinating! One of my missions and visions for Wrigleyville Dental is to bring awareness about holistic dentistry to my patients and educate them on this modern way of practicing medicine. Since 2012, I’ve been attending the Holistic Dental Association annual meetings. This past April, it was held in Houston, Texas, and I was thrilled to learn more about the cutting-edge practice of holistic dentistry. For the last three years, I was the president of the Holistic Dental Association, This month, we celebrate an amazing 10 years in business, delivering the most modern and comprehensive dental care to our valued patients!

and 2022 was the year that I gave up my presidency. Having the opportunity to take part in and collaborate with my dental peers is always an honorable experience. We’ve also been working hard on our new website, which is set to launch sometime this month. It will feature a lot of valuable information about the benefits of holistic dentistry as well as several resources like the ability to pay your bill or schedule an appointment. Be on the lookout for its launch! I’m also proud to announce that an article I wrote helping other colleages understand holistic dentistry will be featured in Dental Hypothesis, a peer review journal. Within that same wheelhouse, I was also recently interviewed and quoted in The Academy of General Dentistry, a dental journal geared toward all general dentists. In 2016, I became a fellow of the Academy, which has both a digital and print version. I’m honored to be mentioned and quoted in such a prestigious journal about finding the balance within holistic dentistry and ways we can all be practicing a more science-based and modern form of dentistry. As I previously mentioned, for the past several New Year’s resolutions, my goal was to “find balance,” and this balance means taking time to relish in the love and beauty of my family. Back in May, we ventured down to Florida to visit my brother and two nephews who are around the same age as my girls. Having the cousins all play together was a heartwarming time and we really enjoyed the reunion. My family just recently returned from a trip to Israel, where we visited my husband’s family. We hadn’t been able to visit since before the pandemic, and having some family members who hadn’t yet met my youngest daughter, who will be three this month, was absolutely magical. Relaxing, touring, and vacationing with family were just what we all needed to connect and reset this summer. My sister Megan will soon be visiting us here in Chicago, from California, and she's bringing along the newest addition to our family, my first niece. I'm looking forward to tons of baby snuggles! And this fall, as Sonya starts kindergarten at Waldorf, Maya will also start pre-school there. A big step for both girls to start "big-girl school" and for me to reflect on how quickly time is passing. Until then, we will be soaking up every last bit of the Chicago summer and enjoying our time spent together! I hope that each of you had a fun-filled summer and I cannot wait to see you all and hear about it! My first day back in the office will be on Wednesday, Sept. 21. I'm looking forward to seeing your smiling faces then!

3 IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS TO TEACH YOUR TEEN

Leaving the nest can be tough for young adults. There are so many things to remember, like making sure they have all the right supplies and remembering to keep important paperwork. So, before your child heads off to college, help them strengthen these three skills. How to Ask for Help Being capable starts with understanding what you need and asking for it. By having your child order their own food at a restaurant, make medical and dental appointments for themselves, and check out at the supermarket alone, you’ll be helping your child develop independence while encouraging them to take the lead. How to Seamlessly Get From Point A to Point B When your teen leaves the house, they’ll be traveling on their own on a bus, on a plane, by car, and by foot, so they’ll need to understand how to navigate airports, subway stations, bus hubs, and roads. Ask your child to give you directions when describing how to get to the mall or have them even drive you there if they are licensed. This will reduce stress during solo travels, and they’re less likely to feel overwhelmed if plans unexpectedly change. How to Handle Emergencies When children are fairly young, they learn how to call 911 in the event of life-threatening and serious emergencies. But other emergencies tend to pop up in life that don’t necessarily warrant a call to the police.

Show your child how to put on a spare tire, turn off utilities, patch a hole in clothing, and other basic but necessary skills so they don’t panic when something goes wrong in their dorm room or on the road. As a parent, it’s our job to teach our children the right skills to set them up for success and independence so they can take care of themselves when they finally go off on their own.

Why Early Intervention Orthodontics Are Important EARLY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME

As a general rule of thumb, proactivity is better than reactivity with anything in life. It’s best to have your roof inspected as it ages to point out potential problem areas before leaking or damage takes place. It’s important to have our cars tuned up to ensure they don’t break down, and going to the doctor for wellness visits is paramount to keep our bodies healthy and to catch warning signs of sicknesses or diseases. The same is true in orthodontics, especially when it comes to our children’s treatment. Early intervention orthodontics is extremely important to help identify potential orthodontic problems when they first present themselves, or in some cases, before they are even apparent. According to the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO), a child should see an orthodontist when an orthodontic issue first presents itself, or before a child is 7 years old. Here at Wrigleyville Dental,

know that how a child breathes, swallows and rests their tongue is an integral part in the way their jaw and teeth develop. So if their mouth isn't closed and lips aren't together, proper alignment cannot occur. These behaviors can be corrected with myofunctional therapy. And early intervention orthodontics can help children with their breathing and teeth spacing before permanent teeth erupt! It can also help with proper growth and cognitive development. Even though all permanent teeth are not in at this age, early intervention treatment can prevent certain complications from becoming more serious while waiting for all of the permanent teeth to come in. Some complications that are best treated at an early age include:

Crowded teeth

• Crossbites (when the jaw is shifting to either the right or left side) • Underbites (when the lower front teeth are in front of the upper front teeth) • Thumb-sucking or pacifier-sucking that is affecting tooth and jaw growth and development • Sleep issues (often times a dental origin)

we are helping our patients and our own kids, as young

as 5 years old, with orthodontic needs.

Recent literature repeatedly stresses the importance of proper oral habits. We now

CHOOSING JOY EVERY DAY 3 WAYS TO FOSTER A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

In today’s society, we are faced with tragic stories and upsetting information, no matter where we turn. This can quickly lead us to a negative mindset where we believe things can’t be fixed and will only get worse, so it’s even more important now to establish a positive mindset. Though it might be easier to bury your head in the sand, fostering positivity in your life will provide you with many benefits. But doing so is easier said than done. If you’re unsure where to begin, try out some of these methods to help you get started. Focus on the silver lining. When something bad or unfortunate happens, we are quick to think about the negatives and how they will impact us in the future. Instead, we should be searching for a silver lining. You can find a positive in any situation, but you’ll have to put in the effort to flip your perspective. Keep a gratitude journal. When we think about gratitude and thankfulness, our minds usually think about Thanksgiving. But we don’t need to wait for a special day to show gratitude. Things happen to us every day that we should be grateful for. If you’re struggling to acknowledge your blessings, keep a gratitude journal and write a few things you are thankful for each day. Over time, that thought process will seep into your daily life. Surround yourself with positive people. The people we associate with play a huge role in our mental well-being. If you’re constantly around people who put you down or tell you that you can’t accomplish certain things, you will feel worse about yourself — or even believe them. You need to block the negative people from your life and surround yourself with those who think optimistically. Establishing a positive mindset in today’s world may be difficult, but it is not impossible if you develop a strategy and follow through with it.

Place a number in every cell in the grid, using the numbers 1–9. You can only use each number once in each row, each column, and each of the 3x3 boxes.

Nature to the Rescue! Five Superfoods That Combat Chronic Inflammation

At one point or another, we’ve all had inflammation. When our bodies detect something foreign and send our immune systems into defense mode, inflammatory cells are triggered as well to heal any damaged tissue or attack bacteria. However, some people suffer from chronic inflammation, which can include pain, tenderness, swelling, skin rashes, joint pain, fever, and fatigue. Chronic inflammation occurs when the body is not in defense mode and can be difficult to address. To treat chronic inflammation, there are many medications and treatments on the market, but what if there was something better — something natural, and with an assortment of benefits for your body? There are many superfoods powerful enough to combat the negative effects of chronic inflammation that are great for your body. Let’s take a look! BERRIES Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries all contain anthocyanins, a particular type of antioxidant that fights inflammation in our bodies. Another added benefit is that studies have proven that berries lower the risk of diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease. FATTY FISH Certain types of fish, including salmon, anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and herring, are a great source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids and

protein. They also include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid

(DHA), both of which are great at fighting inflammation in our bodies.

CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES Cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, and Brussels sprouts provide many anti-inflammatory benefits and also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. These particular veggies contain sulforaphane, the antioxidant responsible for helping to reduce inflammation. GREEN TEA Many health gurus will tell you that green tea is likely one of the healthiest beverages you can drink. Naturally occurring, green tea contains many antioxidants and a compound called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which reduces inflammation and prevents fatty acids in your cells from being damaged. TOMATOES Not only are tomatoes a chock full of vitamin C and potassium, but they also include an antioxidant known as lycopene, which reduces inflammation and helps to prevent cancer. Lycopenes also increase if the tomato is cooked.
