true judgment, and their warriors strength (vs. 5, 6). There would have been no need for them to look elsewhere for wisdom and might. Through the Lord there would have been given justice and peace extending to all their borders, and victory over all their enemies would have been assured. But the people refused what might have been theirs (vs. 7, 8). Because of their love of strong drink, their beauty was lost and their property faded away. Judgment and strength left them, and they went down into the insensibility of drunkenness, losing the right path and coming at last to the loss of even outward decency. In such sad results as these is seen the curse of intemperance among any people. Our own nation, en couraging intemperance among its people, is perilously near the brink of moral ruin which this lesson describes. III. T he P rinciple for C hristians (R om . 14:21) For the Christian, the Holy Spirit lays down a principle which is to govern the treatment accorded the weak brother. When the word “weak” is used, the reference is not to mere physical weakness, but to that weakness of faith which cannot rise to, and dwell in, the full sphere of grace. The “weak” one is constantly troubled by scruples which are more or less legal. But even so, he must be protected. There will be temptation to complain about the weak ness of the brother, but after all is said that can be said, this declaration remains for our guidance: “It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth.” Points and Problems 1. “Offered strange fire" (Lev. 10:1). What this “strange fire” was we are not told precisely except that it was fire which the Lord “commanded them not.” From this passage we may learn that anything is “strange fire” which falls outside the written revelation of God. It is worthy of note also in this connection that the “strange fire” on this original occasion was not offered by an outsider, but by the regularly appointed ministers of the sanctuary. Like wise today, most of the perverted notions of religion are being offered and retailed by those men who have taken the sacred vows of the Christian ministry. 2. " There went out fire . . . , and de voured them, and they died" (10:2). It is remarkable that there is no delay, no offer of mercy, no discussion of the merits of the case, no opportunity given as in other cases for repentance. Judgment falls like a thunder clap. In the eyes of God, there is no sin like the offering of false religion by those who have taken the vows of the only true religion. 3. "Do not drink wine nor strong drink” (10:9). It should be noticed that this prohibition did not extend to all Israel at all times. First, it was addressed specifically to the priests, Aaron and his sons (v. 9). And second, the prohibition applied to times of their ministrations in the tabernacle serv ice: “when ye go into the tabernacle” (v. 9). However, in the antitype the prohibition would be absolute, applying to all believers

at all times. Every Christian believer is a priest, and all believers are at all times in the true temple of God. 4. There is undoubtedly a direct con nection between the offering of strange fire and the prohibition of strong drink for priests during their ministrations. Nadab and Abihu were doubtless partially in toxicated, and in this condition they com mitted their daring sin. Alcohol always deadens the ordinary judgment of men. But there are other forms of intoxication. The men today who are offering “strange fire” are often intoxicated, not with alcohol, but with the wine of their own reasonings and self-sufficiency. is what God said to A a ro n : “D rin k no w in e no r s tro n g drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not” (Lev. 10:9, R.V.). There were people in that day who drank wine, just as there are people today who do, and God thought of it in that day the same as He thinks of it today. In His Word, He tells us again and again of the trouble that will come to us if we take strong drink. * A « s i O *
