AUGUST 4 Abiding Treasure

AUGUST 1 | God’s Greatest Gift

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him” (1 John 4:16). The characteristic of Love is that she “seeketh not her own.” She finds her happi ness in giving to others; she sacrifices her self wholly for others. Even so God offered Himself to mankind in the Person of His Son, and the Son offered Himself upon the cross to bring that love to men, and to win their hearts. The everlasting love with which the Father loved the Son is the same love with which the Son has loved us. This selfsame love of God Christ has poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, so that our whole life may be permeated with its vital power.— A ndrew M urray . AUGUST 2 Back to the Blood “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with an other, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from albsin” (1 John 1:7). Whatever our experience, whatever our privileges in knowing the doctrine of sancti fication, let us come back again and again as sinners and claim the cleansing of the blood of Christ. St. Paul described himself as the chief of sinners. He said, “Of whom I am chief.” He did not say, “Of whom I was chief.” He wrote these words long after he had entered into the life of victory. He knew the experience of sanctification, but when he saw himself apart from Christ he could only see himself as a sinner. We are never going to learn the secret of sancti fication if one little bit of pride is coming in.— A. S t . J ohn T horpe . AUGUST 3 Purified by the B lessed Hope “And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure” (1 John 3:3). If believers are not thus purifying them selves, the reason is close to hand: they are not living in the advent light, and in the joy of our hope. To such,, one look at Christ will serve to reveal the utter hollowness of all they have chosen in place of Him, and to fill the heart, for howsoever brief a time, with the agony of remorse. But, to those who have heard His word and obeyed, that first long look at His blessed face will com pensate a thousand times over for any seem ing loss which they may have sustained here.—W. G raham S croggie .

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matt. 6:20). We lose what on ourselves we spend;

We have, as treasure without end Whatever, Lord, to Thee we lend Who givest all. Whatever, Lord, we lend to Thee, Repaid a thousandfold will be; Then gladly will we give to Thee, Who givest all.

AUGUST 5 A D efeated Enemy “A nd the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly” (Rom. 16:20). The believer stands in triumph in the Word of God. Knowing God, and knowing all that is coming to pass, he sees Satan, the counterfeit god, the one who is attempt ing to play God, and knows in advance that he is defeated. We ourselves standing in Christ are in the place of victory. Noth ing can touch us unless it passes through the will of God. For the one who has been born again, that hedge is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. If Satan takes us that he may sift us as wheat, only the chaff will be removed, and the wheat will remain. In Satan’s assaults the Lord is there, watching over every detail so that nothing may touch us that is not measured to our need.— D onald G rey B arnhouse . AUGUST 6 God’s Dwelling Place “In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" (Col. 2:9). “Where does God live?” asks the little child. “Oh, that I knew where I might find Him!” cries the earnest man. We are all seeking Thy dwelling place, thou King of kings. We have not yet found a palace large enough to contain Thee. Some have sought Thee in the water, some in the air, some in the fire, because the water, and the air, and the fire are to us boundless things. Yet it is not in the boundless that Thou desirest to be found; it is in the limited, the broken, the contrite. The heaven of heavens cannot contain Thee, but the broken and the contrite heart can; it is there Thou delightest most to dwell. —G eorge M atheson . • • • MISSIONARY glory of a risen Saviour in the darkness of Burma where he served as the first American foreign missionary. “THE SMOKING RECTOR,” by Charles G. Pease, author of “Divine Power** and other books. Clearly indicating various harmful and abnormal social customs in the Church that hinder the manifestation of the Holy Spirit as witnessed in the lives of the apostles and should never have been lost, and which may be recovered when professing Christians care more for the kingdom of God than for the gratification of cultivated (by example), enslaving, perverted appetites that pijt their “mark** upon the face. Not the Christ mark, and not the mark of beauty, concerning which they have been kept in ignorance (Ezek. 33 :7-9).
