"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God; I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness” (Isa. 41:10). I would not ask for only peace through life, Nor would I ask for joy unmixed with pain; The bitter with the sweet must come— The sunshine with the rain. Let joy or sorrow come—it matters not; For this alone, my Lord, I make my plea, Whatever comes or goes, to feel Thy arms supporting me. —M ildred J oyce R ader . AUGUST 11 Tender-Hearted "And 1 will give you a heart of flesh” (Ezek. 36:26). The hard heart does not love the Re deemer, but the renewed heart burns with affection toward Him. Many are the privi leges of this renewed heart. . . . It is fitted to receive every spiritual blessing, and every blèssing comes to it. It is prepared to yield every heavenly fruit to the honor, and praise of God, and therefore the Lord delights in it. A tender heart is the best defense against sin, and the best prepara tion for heaven. A renewed heart stands on its watchtower looking for the coming of the Lord Jesus. AUGUST 7 Practical Holiness

“Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular so love his w ife even as himself; and the w ife see that she reverence her husband” (Eph. 5:33). It is a very remarkable thing that in the apostle’s letter to the Ephesians he leads us up to the highest heights of divine revela tion, to that which thrills our souls, as he speaks of our . . . blessings in heavenly places in Christ. Then in the closing portion of this letter . . . he applies this wonderful body of truth to the behavior of a Christian family. It is a poor thing to talk high truth while living on a low level in the home. I am afraid there are those who can repeat very glibly the statements of the first half of the Epistle to the Ephesians and delight in the wondrous privileges that belong to the people of God, who fail wretchedly when it comes to exemplifying the truth in the last half of this Epistle in the daily life; and yet that is simply the truth of the first chapters made practical.—H. A. I ronside . AUGUST 8 Pearls from Pain "In every thing ye are enriched by him” (1 Cor. 1:5). We may learn a lesson of profound and practical value from the formation of the pearls which are of such surpassing beauty, and priceless worth. These pearls have their origin in grains of sand that have somehow come within the oyster’s shell. To relieve itself from the painful irritation caused by the presence of this foreign element, the oyster covers it with several coatings of a smooth and shining secretion, and by this means the irritating sand-grains are trans formed into those precious treasures known to us as pearls. So we, in like manner, may deal with, and be delivered from, the worries of our daily life. When they are not removed we may cover them with God. His all-sufficient grace will enable us to “bear” and to glory in the power of Christ that rests upon us. We shall thus transform our “worries” into spiritual pearls that will adorn the diadem of our blessed Lord and redound to His glory. —B. M c C all B arbour . "Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil” (1 Tim. 3:7). Our holy faith does not consist in talk ing. Reality is what we want. Let us have heart work; let us be genuine. Breth ren, we should so live as to be missed both in the church and in the world when we are removed. . . . We should live in such a manner as that, if we were called hence, our dear brethren and sisters might feel our loss, and from their inmost souls exclaim: “Oh, that such an one, were in our midst AUGUST 9 Witnessing to Unbelievers
