find its way to the business, to the pleas ures, and to all the relationships of life. When we cannot write: “Holy unto the Lord,” we may be quite sure that we are handling something which must be re nounced.— Life of Faith. AUGUST 22 Ever Living to Encourage “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept’ (1 Cor. 15:20). At the battle of Prestonpans, an old Highland chieftain was leading his men into the fray when he fell wounded to the ground. His clansmen, seeing their leader fall, began to falter and give way. Rais ing himself on one hand he cried, as he waved the other, “I am not dead, my chil dren, I am not dead. I am looking to see you do your duty.” The sound of their leader’s voice acted like magic on the clans men, who rallied and returned undaunted to the fray. From the throne of God there comes a voice, like the sound of many waters, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for ever more.”—W. M. R obertson . AUGUST 23 No Separation “For 1 am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, . . . shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38, 39). On a cloudless January night, late ar rived in Rome, we stood in the Coliseum, a party of friends from England. Orion, the giant with the sword, glimmered like the specter of persecution above the huge pre cinct; for the full moon, high in the heavens, overpowered the stars. By its light we read Romans 8:38, 39, written so long ago to be read in that same city, soon made the scene of countless martyrdoms. “Do you want a relic?” said a pope to an eager visitor. “Gather dust from the Coli seum; it is all the martyrs.” We recited the words of the Epistle, and gave thanks to Him who had there triumphed in His saints over life and death, over beasts, and men, and demons.— H andley G. C. M oule . AUGUST 24 His Wealth “Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearch able riches of Christ” (Eph. 3:8). The “unsearchable riches” fit themselves into every possible condition of human pov erty and need. The ocean of grace flows about the shore of common life, into all its distresses and gaping wants, and it fills every crack and crevice to the full. That is the sublime confidence of the Apostle Paul. He stands before all desert places in human' life, the mere cinder heaps, the men and women with burnt-out enthusi- • • • STIMULATION and vitalizing. Emphasis upon a living Christ and the unlimited power of the Holy Spirit fills the reader with the consciousness that “Christianity is dangerously alive.” 136 pages. Augsburg Pub. House. Cloth. “And on my servants and on my hand maidens 1 w ill pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy” (Acts 2:18). I have written and preached much on the Holy Spirit, for the knowledge of Him has been the most vital fact of my experi ence. I owe everything to the gift of Pentecost. It came to me when I was not seeking it . . . If came along the line of duty, in a crisis of obedience. — S amuel C hadwick . “For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities” (Heb. 4:15). We bend in the human frail fashion, And sway ’neath the weight of the rod, But swift in its blessed compassion Still hastens the help of our God: And the sigh of the spirit faint-hearted Goes up in a song to the throne, Such strength in its need is imparted— “He trod the wine-press alone.” — The Dawn. “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints” (1 Cor. 14:33). There is never need to act impulsively or hastily in doing the will of God. The devil would hurry you and make you act precipitately and ill-advisedly. In God’s will there is always quietness and freedom, never questionings and doubts and fears. There are four conditions of mind which are never from God: darkness—¡God is light; doubt—God always gives faith; dis-. couragement—God says, “Be of good cour age.” The fourth is confusion—God is not the author of confusion. All of these come from the devil as he seeks to keep you from doing the will of God.—From God’s Fel- low-Workers by L. L. Legters. “In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD. . . . Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the Lord of hosts” (Zech. 14:20, 21). The possibilities of Scriptural holiness are so vast that seven days in a week are required for their accomplishment and ful fillment. The ancient Jew might have looked for holiness on the robe of the priest, but Zechariah says that we must look for it on the bells of the horses, and on the pots in Jerusalem. Thus holiness must find its way into the home, and turn every secular interest into a sacred possession. It must AUGUST 19 He Knows AUGUST 20 Marks o f His Leading — AUGUST 21 Holy unto the Lord
