herd giveth his life for the sheep” (John 10 : 11 ). Let us never forget that Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and that He gave His life for the sheep. If we are to be in sympathy with His mind, and if all our love is to be given to Him, we must carry on the work that is dear to His heart. Do we think sometimes, even to a point of tears, of those who are straying over the bleak mountains of sin and shame? Do we sometimes long to give up everything in order that we may spend the rest of our life in the great task of rescuing the perishing and caring for the dying?— Life of Faith. AUGUST 29 D elightful Discoveries “And I will delight myself in thy com mandments, which I have loved” (Psa. 119:47). My experience is that the Bible is dull when I am dull. When I am really alive and set in upon the text with a tidal pres sure of living affinities, it opens, it multi plies discoveries, and reveals depths even faster than I can note them. The worldly spirit shuts the Bible: the Spirit of God makes it a fire flaming out all-meaning and glorious truths.— H orace B ushnell . What a contrast to all ineffectual effort and dismal disappointment is presented in those who have learned to wait for God! When the time is full, they hear Him say, “I am come down, and I will send thee.” From that moment they are no longer pro moters, but instruments, agents, and tools through whom He executes His plans. What, then, are difficulties to them? They anticipate them without anxiety; they pass through them without fear. God must have foreseen all before He put His hand to the work. He must be able to see a pathway threading the apparently track less waste. He must know a door through what appears to be an impregnable barrier of rock.—F. B. M eyer . AUGUST 30 A Way Through th e Mountains "And I will make all my mountains a way, and all my highways shall be exalted” (Isa. 49:11). "Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring 'it to pass . . . Trust in the Lord and wait patiently for him” (Psa. 37: 5, 7). Beloved, our Heavenly Father Had somewhat to thee to say, When in His love He called thee From the throng of life’s highway, For duties and cares were pressing, And eager were hand and heart, When His voice in clearest accents, Said gently, “Come ye apart.” —F. dignity of being ambassadors for the King of kings; all His power is at all times bee hind us. —J. H udson T aylor . AUGUST 27 Taken into Account "For we must all appear before the judg ment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, ac cording to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad” (2 Cor. 5:10). The bad is to be dealt with as well as the good. We shall all be gathered in the Father’s home as His children, for we have been born into His family, and there is a place prepared for us yonder. Not one who has been thus regenerated will be miss ing. That is glorious, but, beloved, when we get there, what is it going to mean to you and to me if we have walked careless ly and wrought selfishly? It is so easy to presume upon our standing in grace, and to think, “Oh, yes, I shall arrive; I will be there.” That is true, but what will it mean to you and to me when we do get there? For our characters will be re vealed then, as we stand before Him whose eyes are as a flame of fire; the mo tives of our hearts will be laid bare; and our dealing with our brothers and sisters ill Christ will be taken into account. —H arvey F armer . AUGUST 28 Helping th e Good Shepherd “I am the good shepherd: the good shep-

asms and affections, and he boldly pro claims their possible enrichment. He stands before sorrow, and proclaims that sorrow can be transfigured. He stands before the broken and perverted relationships of men, and proclaims that they can be rectified. And all this in the strength of “the un searchable riches of Christ.”— J. H. J owett . AUGUST 25 Time Well Spent "We will give ourselves to prayer” (Acts 6:4). It is no loss of time to pray. Many think it is chiefly, or wholly, lost time. They are so full of business, they say, and assume that prayer will spoil their business. I tell you that your business will go all the better for much prayer. Are you studying? It is no loss of time to pray, as I know well by my own experience. If I am to preach, with only two hours of preparation, I give one hour to prayer.—C. G. F inney .* AUGUST 26 Good Protection “For the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Neh. 8:10). A holy joy in God is a far better protec tor than a revolver. The one might inspire fear and hate; the other will suggest inno cence, and tend to inspire faith in us and in our message. It may not always bring deliverance—our Master was crucified and Stephen was stoned; but blessings infinite ly greater than could otherwise have been achieved were the result. There is some thing better than protection; but the mar tyr’s crown is prepared for few, and such are prepared for it. To us is given the *From Prevailing Prayer.
